Choose Tamil vocabulary for purpose and audience

Your Tamil sounds natural when you talk, but it reads too casual when you write.

A word can be correct Tamil and still wrong for the task. Choosing vocabulary means matching the word to the reader and the purpose, not picking the hardest word you know.

This lesson is part of SPM Tamil vocabulary and accuracy. After it, save the new words in a contextual vocabulary review set.

Which word fits: the two-question test

Before you write a sentence, answer two questions.

  1. Who will read this? A principal, a friend, a newspaper reader, a character in a story?
  2. What is the purpose? To request, to describe, to persuade, to tell a story?

The answers decide the register. A request to a principal needs respectful, written Tamil. A line of dialogue between two friends can be spoken Tamil.

Spoken and written forms side by side

Here are original pairs showing how everyday forms change in writing.

Spoken form Written form Meaning
இல்ல இல்லை there is not
பாத்தேன் பார்த்தேன் I saw
வாங்க வாருங்கள் please come
போங்க செல்லுங்கள் please go
நீ தாங்கள் you (respectful)

The forms on the left are natural when you speak. In an application, a report or a formal essay, the forms on the right are expected.

Worked example: one message, two readers

Suppose the message is: “I could not attend school yesterday because I was unwell, please excuse me.”

For a friend (spoken register): நேத்து உடம்பு சரியில்ல, அதான் ஸ்கூலுக்கு வரல.

For a class teacher (written, respectful register): நேற்று எனக்கு உடல்நலம் சரியில்லாததால் பள்ளிக்கு வர இயலவில்லை. தயவுசெய்து மன்னிக்கவும்.

The meaning is the same. The teacher version uses the written forms நேற்று and பள்ளி, the respectful request மன்னிக்கவும், and avoids the borrowed word ஸ்கூல். Each choice is about the reader.

The mistake to avoid

The common mistake is to mix registers, such as opening a letter with a respectful greeting and then writing “இல்ல” in the body. The letter reads as uneven.

A second mistake is to over-correct with rare words. A sentence like “என் நிலையை உணர்ந்து மன்னிக்கவும்” is clear and formal, and needs no dictionary word to impress.

A quick register check for your own drafts

After writing, scan for three kinds of word.

  • Spoken contractions, such as இல்ல or பாத்தேன்.
  • English words that have a common Tamil equivalent, such as ஸ்கூல் for பள்ளி.
  • The word for “you”, which must match the reader.

Replace what does not fit the task. Keep a note of the ones you catch in your mistake log, because you will probably repeat them.

Check yourself

Rewrite this spoken sentence for a formal letter to the principal: நான் நாளைக்கு வர மாட்டேன், ஏன்னா வீட்டுல வேலை இருக்கு.

Answer

One good version: நான் நாளை பள்ளிக்கு வர இயலாது, ஏனெனில் வீட்டில் அவசர வேலை உள்ளது.

The changes: நாளைக்கு becomes நாளை, ஏன்னா becomes ஏனெனில், வீட்டுல becomes வீட்டில், and இருக்கு becomes உள்ளது. A formal letter would also add a respectful opening such as “ஐயா”.

Common questions

Is spoken Tamil wrong in exams?

Spoken forms are not wrong in conversation, and a short dialogue inside a story may use them. Formal writing such as a letter, a report or an argument needs the written form. Follow the task.

How do I know which form a task needs?

Ask who is reading and why. A formal letter to a principal needs respectful written Tamil. A speech to classmates can be warmer. The task wording tells you who the audience is.

Do I need big, difficult words to sound formal?

No. Formal Tamil means the written form of ordinary words and respectful address. Clear, correctly spelt words are better than rare words used wrongly.

Can I mix both in one piece of writing?

Only with a reason, such as dialogue. Inside narration or an argument, stay with one register so the piece reads as one voice.

If your written Tamil keeps slipping into the way you speak, one-to-one Tamil lessons let a teacher mark those slips in your own writing and show the formal form for each.
