A contextual review set is a small collection of cards, each holding a word, the sentence you met it in, your own sentence, and a review date. The aim is to use the word in your writing, not only to recognise it.
This lesson is part of SPM Tamil vocabulary and accuracy. It works best after you have met commonly confused words in context.
What goes on a review card?
Each card has four parts. Fill all four, because each one does a different job.
| Part | What to write | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Word | The Tamil word in its dictionary form | Name the target |
| Context | The sentence where you met it | Keep the real meaning and partner words |
| Your sentence | One new sentence you build yourself | Prove you can use it |
| Review dates | Day 1, then after 3 days, then after 7 days | Bring it back before it fades |
The context sentence matters most. A word on its own, like a flashcard with only a translation, gives no clue about which words normally sit beside it.
Worked example: one card built from a passage
Suppose you read this original sentence in a short passage: விடாமுயற்சியுடன் பயிற்சி செய்த அவள் இறுதியில் வெற்றி பெற்றாள்.
You do not know விடாமுயற்சி. Here is the finished card.
- Word: விடாமுயற்சி (persistence, continuing to try without giving up)
- Context: விடாமுயற்சியுடன் பயிற்சி செய்த அவள் இறுதியில் வெற்றி பெற்றாள்.
- Your sentence: விடாமுயற்சி இருந்தால் கடினமான பாடமும் எளிதாகும்.
- Review dates: today, in 3 days, in 7 days.
Notice the ending -உடன் in the context sentence. It shows that விடாமுயற்சி is used in the pattern “with persistence”. Record that pattern next to the word, because it is what you will need when you write.
The mistake to avoid
The common habit is to copy twenty words from a textbook list and write an English meaning beside each. The list looks complete, but a week later the words are not recognised, and none appear in an essay.
The better habit is five words from your own reading, each with a sentence you wrote. Fewer cards, but every card is ready to be used.
A review rhythm you can keep
Review in short rounds. Cover the word and try to recall the meaning, then cover your sentence and write a fresh one.
- Day 1: make the card and say the sentence aloud.
- Day 4: recall the meaning, then write a new sentence.
- Day 8: use the word in a short paragraph.
Words you recall easily move to a “known” pile. Words you miss stay in the active set. The spaced recall planner can help you set those dates.

Build a card for the word பொறுமை from this original context sentence: பொறுமையாகக் காத்திருந்த அவனுக்கு இறுதியில் நல்ல செய்தி கிடைத்தது. Write the meaning and your own sentence.
Answer
Word: பொறுமை, meaning patience, the ability to wait calmly.
Context: the context sentence above. Note the form பொறுமையாக, which turns the noun into an adverb describing how he waited.
One good sentence of your own: பொறுமையுடன் படித்தால் புதிய சொற்கள் மனத்தில் நிற்கும். Any accurate sentence that uses பொறுமை with a suitable ending is acceptable.
Review dates: today, after 3 days, after 7 days.
