SPM Physics links ideas, equations and graphs, so knowing a formula is only the first step. This guide shows how the chapters connect and where to begin.
What does SPM Physics assess?
It tests whether you can explain a physical idea, choose and apply an equation, read data and graphs, and reason about an experiment. Check the current paper structure on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website (lp.moe.gov.my).
The exam guide explains how to prepare, and the glossary lists the terms.
How do the chapters connect?
Measurement comes first because units, scalars and vectors, and graph plotting are used everywhere. Force and Motion I builds the core ideas of motion, force, momentum and energy.
Later chapters reuse them. Pressure and Gravitation apply force ideas. Waves and Light and Optics both use graphs and diagrams. Electricity leads to Electromagnetism.
A short example: from graph to equation
Here is an original example. A spring is stretched and a graph of force against extension is a straight line through the origin. One point is (0.05 m, 1.0 N). Find the equation linking force and extension.
A straight line through the origin means force is proportional to extension, so F = kx. The gradient is k = 1.0 ÷ 0.05 = 20 N/m. The equation is F = 20x, with x in metres.
A common slip is to use 5 cm as 5, which gives k = 0.2, 100 times too small. The unit check catches it: the gradient must be in N/m, so the extension must be in metres.
Who should start where?
If you know formulas but cannot choose one, try choosing a Physics formula. If graphs go wrong, read reading Physics graphs without confusing slope and area.
Start from the Form 4 chapters or the Form 5 chapters. If you want someone to question your reasoning, online one-to-one SPM Physics tuition goes through units, graphs and working with you. You can try it first in the one-hour trial class (from RM50).
