Practise a timed Tamil reading and writing set

You practise Tamil untimed and feel rushed the moment there is a clock.

A timed set trains you to read, answer and check within a fixed window. The mini set below takes about 25 minutes, and you can shorten it for a quick run.

This lesson is part of language practice and revision. The timed original practice session builder offers a way to set the clock.

How should I split the time?

Use this split for the mini set below.

Stage Time What to do
Read the passage 5 minutes Find the main idea, underline key words
Answer the two questions 8 minutes Point, quotation, explanation
Write four sentences 8 minutes Plan, then write
Check 4 minutes Verb endings, spelling, sandhi

Worked example: the original mini set

பள்ளி நூலகத்தில் இந்த வாரம் புத்தகக் கண்காட்சி நடைபெறுகிறது. மாணவர்கள் மதிய இடைவேளையில் புத்தகங்களைப் பார்வையிடலாம். வாங்க விரும்புவோர் வகுப்பாசிரியரிடம் பெயரைப் பதிவு செய்ய வேண்டும்.

In English: A book exhibition is held at the school library this week. Students may look at the books during lunch break. Those who wish to buy must register their name with the class teacher.

Question 1. When can students look at the books?

Question 2. What must a student do to buy a book?

Writing task. Write four sentences about an event at your school.

Answer

Q1: During the lunch break: “மதிய இடைவேளையில் புத்தகங்களைப் பார்வையிடலாம்”.

Q2: Register their name with the class teacher: “வகுப்பாசிரியரிடம் பெயரைப் பதிவு செய்ய வேண்டும்”.

Writing sample: எங்கள் பள்ளியில் விளையாட்டு விழா நடைபெற்றது. மாணவர்கள் ஓட்டப்பந்தயத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டனர். வெற்றி பெற்றவர்களுக்குப் பரிசுகள் வழங்கப்பட்டன. நாங்கள் அனைவரும் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் வீடு திரும்பினோம்.

The sample has four sentences: the event, the action, the result and the ending. Each verb matches its subject and uses the past tense.

How do I review the set?

After the clock stops, mark your answers against the passage. For each lost mark, write down whether the cause was reading, evidence or language. Add language slips to your private mistake log.

The mistake that costs marks

The common slip is to spend the whole time on the writing task and leave no minutes to check. Verb endings and sandhi slips are the quickest to fix, and they only show up when you reread.

Another slip is to answer from memory of the topic instead of the passage. A book exhibition is easy to imagine, but only the passage tells you who registers with whom.

Check yourself

Time yourself on a set of your own. Choose a passage of three sentences from any Tamil text you own, write one question about it, answer it, and write three sentences on a related topic. Stay inside 15 minutes.

Answer

There is no fixed answer, so mark against these points: did you answer from the passage, did you quote exact words, did each sentence have a matching verb ending, and did you keep 2 minutes to check?

If the checking step was skipped, cut the writing task to two sentences next time and keep the time.

What to study next

Build your next steps from the review, using building a revision sequence. When the sequence is set, try the language practice and revision set.

Common questions

Is this timing the same as the SPM paper?

No. It is a short practice timing that you can shrink or stretch. Check the current paper format and timing on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website before planning your full-length practice.

What should I do if I run out of time?

Stop at the time limit, mark what you have, and note which part took too long. Then repeat with the same time split. Do not extend the clock, or the practice loses its value.

Should I read the passage twice?

Read once for the main idea, then return to the lines each question needs. A second full read is not needed in a short passage.

How often should I run a timed set?

Once a week is enough. Follow each set with a review of the answers and a log of any language errors.

If the clock makes you skip the checking step, one-to-one Tamil lessons let a teacher run a short timed set with you and show where your time goes.
