Build a revision sequence from your errors

You revise Tamil by rereading notes, yet the same errors come back in every essay.

A revision sequence puts your own errors in order, fixes one at a time and tests each fix. It works because errors repeat.

This lesson is part of language practice and revision. To collect the errors first, see keeping a private language mistake log.

How do I rank the errors?

Count each error in your recent writing. Then rate the damage: does it change the meaning, or only the spelling? The most frequent and most damaging errors go first.

Worked example: four errors ranked

An original error list from three practice paragraphs:

Error Example written Count Damage
Verb ending does not match subject அவர்கள் வந்தான் 3 High: changes who acts
Missing sandhi consonant புத்தகத்தை கொடுத்தார் 5 Medium: reads wrongly
ல / ள / ழ confusion பலம் for பழம் 4 High: changes the word
Wrong connector ஆனால் for a cause 2 High: changes meaning

The correct forms are அவர்கள் வந்தார்கள், புத்தகத்தைக் கொடுத்தார், பழம் (fruit), and a cause ending such as -ததால். Note that பலம் means strength, so the confusion changes the word, not just the spelling.

Ranking by count and damage:

  1. ல / ள / ழ: 4 times, high damage, so fix first.
  2. Verb ending: 3 times, high damage.
  3. Missing sandhi: 5 times, medium damage. It is the most frequent, yet a reader still understands it.
  4. Connector: 2 times, high damage, but the rarest.

A one-week sequence

Give each day one focus:

  1. Day 1: ல / ள / ழ pairs. Write each word in a sentence.
  2. Day 2: verb endings. Write five sentences with different subjects.
  3. Day 3: sandhi with the object and the verb.
  4. Day 4: connectors. Join three sentence pairs.
  5. Day 5: write a short paragraph using all four fixes.
  6. Day 6: check the paragraph against your list.

End each session with three new sentences and check them the next day.

The mistake that costs marks

The common slip is to revise by rereading notes. Rereading feels productive, but it does not show whether you can now avoid the error.

A second slip is to fix every error in one evening. You may then remember none of the rules clearly. One focus per day keeps the rule sharp.

Check yourself

Your error list has: வந்தான் for plural subjects (4 times), one spelling slip மழை as மளை (1 time), and a missing sandhi (2 times). Which do you fix first, and why?

Answer

Fix the verb ending first. It appears four times and changes who acts, so it is both frequent and damaging.

The missing sandhi comes second, with two occurrences. The spelling slip comes last, since it appeared once. Correct forms: வந்தார்கள், மழை, and the consonant doubling in the object-verb join.

Common questions

Why start from errors instead of from the syllabus?

Your own errors show what costs you marks now. Revising a topic you already write correctly wastes time, while a repeated slip returns in every piece of writing.

How many errors should I work on at once?

One per session. Fixing two or more at once blurs the rule in your head. Keep each session short and end it with three new sentences that use the fixed rule.

How do I rank errors?

Count how often each appears, then note how much meaning it damages. A wrong verb ending that changes who acts outranks a single spelling slip.

What if I have no list of errors yet?

Collect them from two or three recent pieces of writing. The next lesson shows how to keep a private mistake log so the list builds up as you work.

If the same Tamil errors keep returning after revision, one-to-one lessons let a teacher read your own writing, rank the patterns and set the order with you.
