Keep a private Tamil mistake log

You correct a Tamil mistake once, then make it again a week later.

A mistake log records each Tamil error, the correct form and the rule behind it. A tick beside a row shows the error has come back.

This lesson belongs to language practice and revision. Use it with building a revision sequence.

What goes into a log entry?

Each entry has four parts: what you wrote, what is correct, the rule in one line, and a count of repeats. Keep it short enough that you will actually write it.

The log stays private. It can be a notebook or a file on your own device, and nobody else needs to see it.

Worked example: five entries

What I wrote Correct Rule Repeats
நான் நேற்று பள்ளிக்குப் போகிறேன். நான் நேற்று பள்ளிக்குப் போனேன். Past time word needs a past verb II
அவர்கள் வந்தான். அவர்கள் வந்தார்கள். Plural subject needs a plural ending III
புத்தகத்தை கொடுத்தார். புத்தகத்தைக் கொடுத்தார். Add the hard consonant between object and verb IIII
பலம் சாப்பிட்டேன். பழம் சாப்பிட்டேன். பழம் is fruit; பலம் is strength II
மழை பெய்தது ஆனால் நாங்கள் வெளியே போனோம். மழை பெய்தபோதிலும் நாங்கள் வெளியே போனோம். Use -தபோதிலும் for “even though” inside one sentence I

The third row has four ticks, so it goes to the top of the revision list. The last row has one tick and can wait.

How do I review the log?

Once a week, read the rows with two or more ticks. Write three fresh sentences for each one, using the rule. A row that gets no new tick for a month can be marked as settled.

The mistake log and paper-error review tool gives a structure for logging errors from any subject, and its answers stay on your device.

The mistake that costs marks

The common slip is to log only the correct form. A list of correct sentences tells you nothing about what you tend to get wrong.

Another slip is to write a rule that is too vague, such as “be careful”. A rule must tell you what to do next time, for example “check that the verb ending matches the subject”.

Weak entry Better entry
Correct: அவர்கள் வந்தார்கள் Wrote வந்தான்; plural subject needs -ார்கள்
Rule: be careful Rule: check the subject, then the verb ending

Check yourself

Write a log entry for this error: மாணவர்கள் பாடம் படிக்கிறான். (The students are studying the lesson.)

Answer

Wrote: மாணவர்கள் பாடம் படிக்கிறான்.

Correct: மாணவர்கள் பாடம் படிக்கிறார்கள்.

Rule: a plural subject needs a plural ending, -கிறார்கள், not the singular -கிறான்.

Repeats: add a tick each time it happens again. It matches the verb-ending row in the worked example, so add a tick there too.

What to study next

Put the log to work in a timed original reading-and-writing set, then add any new errors.

For a teacher to look at your log and pick the next fix, see online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Tamil tuition.

Common questions

Does the log need an app or an account?

No. A notebook or a plain file on your own device is enough. The log is private, so keep it where only you can read it, and use the rows as a revision list.

What should each entry contain?

The sentence as you wrote it, the corrected sentence, the rule in one line, and a tick for each time you repeat the error. Keep entries short so you will keep adding to them.

How often should I review the log?

Once a week. Look for any row with two or more ticks and treat it as the next item to fix. Rows with no new ticks for a month can be marked as settled.

Should I log spelling slips as well?

Yes, but group similar ones. One row for ல / ள / ழ confusion holds every pair, which keeps the log readable.

If your log shows the same error in every row, one-to-one Tamil lessons let a teacher look at the pattern with you and build short practice around it.
