Explaining imagery and tone with evidence

You can feel the mood of a literary passage but struggle to prove it with the text.

To explain imagery and tone, name the image, say what feeling it creates, and quote the words that show it. Without the quote, the answer is only an opinion.

This lesson is part of the literary response work in SPM Bahasa Cina. Always check your school’s prescribed texts, as shown in checking prescribed texts and current assessment requirements.

What are imagery and tone?

Imagery is what the writer makes you see, hear or feel. Tone is the attitude that comes through.

A quiet playground, a fallen leaf and a motionless swing are images. The tone they create might be loneliness or nostalgia.

A three-part answer pattern

  1. Image. Name the picture or detail.
  2. Feeling. State what it suggests about the mood.
  3. Proof. Quote the shortest words that carry it.

The order can change, but all three must appear.

Worked example with an original passage

Read this original extract.

秋风掠过空荡荡的操场,最后一片叶子停在秋千上,没有再动。铃声早就响过了,可是谁也没有回来。

Question: 这一段营造了怎样的气氛?请说明。

A weak answer: 这一段很伤心,因为秋天很凄凉。

This gives a mood but no detail, and it blames the season, not the text.

A supported answer: 这一段营造了孤寂的气氛。作者写“空荡荡的操场”,说明没有人;“最后一片叶子”和“没有再动”写出静止的画面,“谁也没有回来”则强调被遗留的感觉。

The answer names the tone, then uses three pieces of evidence, each explained briefly. The word 孤寂 is specific, not just 伤心.

The mistake that keeps happening

Students often label the tone using the season or weather and stop. They write 秋天所以悲伤, which is a general belief, not a reading of this passage.

The correct habit is to go back to the passage and pull out the details that created the feeling, then explain each one.

How to choose a precise tone word

Match the word to the evidence.

Evidence Possible tone
Empty spaces, no people 孤寂
Memory of earlier times 怀念
Something unfinished or left behind 惆怅
Calm, steady description 平静

If two words fit, choose the one that covers more of the evidence, or explain both briefly.

奶奶的厨房里,汤还在炉上冒着热气。她把最大的一块鸡肉夹进我碗里,自己却只喝了几口汤。

Question: 这一段表现了怎样的感情?请引用原文说明。

Answer

The feeling is 关爱, a grandmother’s caring sacrifice.

Sample answer: 这一段表现了奶奶对“我”的关爱。“把最大的一块鸡肉夹进我碗里”显示她先想到孙辈,而“自己却只喝了几口汤”说明她愿意自己少吃。“热气”也带来温暖的感觉。

The answer names the feeling, gives two quoted details and explains each. The word “却” shows a contrast between what she gives and what she keeps.

Common questions

What is the difference between imagery and tone?

Imagery is the concrete pictures, sounds or sensations the writer uses. Tone is the attitude or feeling that the writing carries. Images help create tone, so an answer should link them.

How many details should I quote?

Quote the two or three details that best support your point. Quoting an entire passage shows you found the area but not which part matters.

Can I use words like 悲伤 or 温暖 for tone?

Yes, but choose the word that fits the evidence. 孤独, 怀念 and 惆怅 are more specific than 悲伤. The exact word must be supported by the text.

Does this apply to poems too?

The same pattern applies. Name the image, describe the feeling it creates, and quote the words. Check your prescribed texts with your school.

If you sense the mood but cannot prove it in writing, a one-to-one Chinese teacher can work through passages with you and mark your written answers in Chinese.
