A plot summary tells what happened. A theme states what the events say about people or life.
This lesson belongs to the literary response work in SPM Bahasa Cina. It is a separate skill from explaining imagery and tone, because it works across the whole text.
How do you tell theme from plot?
Try this test. If your sentence could be continued with 然后, it is plot. If it says something about people, relationships or choices that holds beyond this story, it is theme.

A one-sentence theme formula
Write: 这篇文章通过（事件），表现了（对人或生活的看法）。
The brackets must be filled with a reading of the events, not a list of them.
Worked example with an original story summary
Original story in brief: 阿强每天放学后帮邻居老伯修理旧单车，老伯从不说谢谢，只是默默递给他一杯茶。毕业那天，老伯把用了几十年的工具箱交给阿强。
Question: 这篇文章的主题是什么？请说明。
A plot answer: 阿强每天帮老伯修单车，后来老伯把工具箱送给他。
This is a retelling. It has no idea about what the events mean.
A theme answer: 这篇文章通过阿强与老伯的相处，表现了默默付出能换来真诚的信任。阿强每天帮忙却不求回报，老伯没有说谢谢，却在毕业那天把珍贵的工具箱交给他，说明对他的认可。
The answer states the theme in the first sentence, then uses two events as proof.
The mistake that keeps happening
Students summarise because the plot is the part they remember best. They write three sentences about events and then add a one-line theme that is not tied to any of them.
The correct order is the reverse. State the theme, then choose the events that prove it, and explain how each one supports it.
How to find the theme
- List the main events in a line each.
- Find the change: what is different at the end?
- Ask what the change says about people or choices.
- Write the theme as a statement, not a topic. 友情 is a topic. 真正的友情在困难时才显现 is a theme.

Original story in brief: 小文每次考试都抄同桌的答案。一次同桌转学，小文只好自己做，结果不及格。他难过了一晚，从那天起开始每天自己复习。
Write a one-sentence theme and name one supporting event.
Answer
Sample: 这个故事表现了依赖别人终究不可靠，只有靠自己努力才能成长。Supporting event: 同桌转学后小文自己考试不及格，他才开始每天自己复习，说明失去依赖后他才意识到要靠自己。
Other wordings are acceptable if the theme is a statement about people and the event proves it. A sentence that only retells, such as 小文抄答案后来不及格, is plot.
