Writing about community and family duties

Your essay on family or community duties keeps repeating that everyone must work together.

Responsibility themes are easy to write badly, because every sentence can be a slogan. A good point says who does what, and what changes because of it.

This lesson belongs to SPM Bahasa Melayu theme-based writing. It pairs well with developing original points about education and skills, which covers the general idea of an original contoh.

What is the difference between a slogan and a point?

A slogan is a sentence you could paste under a poster. A point is a sentence a marker can check against an example.

Slogan Point
Semua orang harus bekerjasama. Jiran yang bergilir-gilir menyapu longkang mengelakkan banjir kilat di taman mereka.
Keluarga mesti saling membantu. Seorang abang yang mengajar adiknya membaca membantu ibu yang bekerja syif malam.

The point on the right has a person, an action and a reason. You can now attach a kesan to it without inventing a new idea.

Worked example: role, action, result

Use a three-part pattern for each paragraph: the role, the action and the result. Take the task “Tanggungjawab ahli keluarga dalam menjaga kebahagiaan rumah tangga”.

First draft. Ahli keluarga perlu bertanggungjawab. Tanggungjawab ini penting untuk kebahagiaan. Jadi, semua orang mesti memainkan peranan.

Revision. Ibu bapa bertanggungjawab meluangkan masa mendengar cerita anak mereka. Sebuah keluarga yang makan malam bersama setiap Jumaat memberi peluang kepada anak bercakap tentang masalah di sekolah. Kesannya, ibu bapa dapat memberi nasihat lebih awal dan suasana rumah menjadi tenang.

Here is what changed. The role is ibu bapa, the action is listening at a fixed time, and the result is earlier advice and a calmer home. The revised paragraph has three sentences and each one adds a fact the draft lacked.

How do I keep the tone balanced?

Tasks on responsibility tempt students to blame one group, such as parents or the young. A fair argument reads better, so show that duties run in more than one direction.

  1. State the duty of one person.
  2. Show a matching duty of another, for example anak and ibu bapa.
  3. Explain how the two together produce the result.

This also stops the karangan from sounding like a lecture. A sentence such as “Anak juga perlu membantu tugas rumah supaya ibu tidak keletihan” gives the other side a role without attacking anyone.

The mistake to avoid

The common mistake is to end every paragraph with “Oleh itu, tanggungjawab amat penting”. That closing line repeats the topic and adds no kesan. Replace it with the effect on a specific person or group, such as “Akibatnya, warga emas di kawasan itu tidak berasa sunyi”.

Check yourself

Revise this draft for the task “Peranan masyarakat dalam menjaga keselamatan kawasan perumahan”. Identify the role, the action and the result in your version.

Masyarakat perlu menjaga keselamatan. Jika semua orang bekerjasama, kawasan akan selamat. Oleh itu, kerjasama amat penting.

Answer

One possible revision: Jawatankuasa penduduk bertanggungjawab menyelaras rondaan sukarela.

Role: jawatankuasa penduduk. Action: rondaan dan laporan. Result: kawasan lebih terang dan lebih selamat. The original had no role and no action.

What to study next

Continue to writing about environmental choices without slogans, which applies the same idea to a theme where slogans are even more tempting. You can record weak paragraphs with the mistake log and paper-error review tool, then test yourself with the theme-based writing practice set.

Common questions

What is wrong with writing that everyone must play a part?

The sentence is true but tells the marker nothing. It names no person, no duty and no result. A stronger point states who does what, in which situation, and what changes because of it.

How do I choose examples for family and community tasks?

Use ordinary situations a reader recognises: a neighbourhood gotong-royong, a sibling helping with homework, a surau committee organising a break-fast meal. Specific, everyday actions read as more credible than dramatic ones.

Should I write about my own family?

You may borrow from real life, but write in a general, third-person voice such as 'sebuah keluarga' or 'seorang pelajar'. Avoid names that identify real people and keep the example relevant to the task.

How many points does a task like this need?

Plan the number of isi that the task and the current paper instructions require, which you can confirm on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website. Whatever the number, give each point its own contoh and kesan.

If your karangan on social themes still sounds like a list of slogans, a one-to-one BM teacher can go through your paragraphs and ask the question that turns each slogan into a specific point.
