Your own points on education and skills

Your education essay has correct sentences, but every point sounds like the same textbook paragraph.

An original point in a karangan is one that only this essay could contain, because it names a real-looking situation and explains its effect. On education and skills tasks, most weak paragraphs are not wrong; they are interchangeable.

This lesson sits inside SPM Bahasa Melayu theme-based writing. It builds on building isi, huraian, contoh and kesan, so read that first if the four parts are new to you.

What does a generic point sound like?

A generic point states a true idea that fits any education task. Try it on a task such as “Kemahiran abad ke-21 penting untuk murid hari ini”.

Here is a typical first draft:

Kemahiran penting dalam pendidikan. Murid perlu menguasai pelbagai kemahiran supaya berjaya. Oleh itu, kemahiran amat penting kepada murid.

The three sentences say the same thing three times. There is no person, no place and no action, so a marker learns nothing new after the first line.

Worked example: one paragraph, three revisions

Take the same point and revise it in passes. Each pass changes one thing, and the reason is written beside it.

Pass 1: give the isi a clear claim. Kemahiran berkomunikasi membantu murid menyampaikan idea dengan yakin. Reason: the first sentence now says which skill and what it does, instead of repeating “penting”.

Pass 2: add huraian that explains how. Murid yang terbiasa berbincang dalam kumpulan belajar mendengar pandangan rakan sebelum memberi pendapat sendiri. Reason: the huraian shows the process, so the claim is no longer only an opinion.

Pass 3: add a contoh and kesan. Contohnya, dalam projek sains sekolah, Farah menerangkan hasil projek kumpulannya kepada guru tanpa membaca nota. Kesannya, guru memahami dapatan projek dengan jelas dan kumpulan itu mendapat maklum balas yang lebih tepat. Reason: a named pupil and a school project give the marker something to picture, and the kesan ties back to “berjaya”.

The finished paragraph reads as one argument instead of three copies of the same sentence.

How do I test whether a point is original?

Ask three questions after every paragraph you write.

  1. Could this paragraph appear unchanged in an essay on a different theme? If yes, it is generic.
  2. Can a reader picture a person, a place or an action? If no, the contoh is missing.
  3. Does the last sentence explain an effect on the reader’s task, not just repeat the isi? If no, the kesan is missing.

A paragraph that passes all three is usually ready. A paragraph that fails the first question needs a new contoh, not more adjectives.

The mistake to avoid

The common mistake is to fix a thin paragraph by adding more general words. Compare the two fixes.

Fix Result
Add adjectives: “kemahiran yang sangat penting dan amat bermanfaat” Longer, but the paragraph still says nothing new
Add a contoh: “Farah menerangkan hasil kajian kumpulannya” The reader can now picture the point

Choose the contoh every time. The mistake log and paper-error review tool helps you record which of your paragraphs fail question 1 so you can spot the habit.

Check yourself

Revise this paragraph for the task “Pendidikan vokasional memberi peluang kerjaya yang luas”. Use no more than five sentences.

Pendidikan vokasional penting. Ramai murid belajar kemahiran. Kemahiran itu berguna untuk bekerja. Oleh itu, pendidikan vokasional amat baik.

Answer

Reasons: the first sentence names the benefit, the second explains how, the third is a specific contoh, and the fourth is a kesan that answers “peluang kerjaya”.

What to study next

Move to the next skill with writing about technology with concrete examples, which uses the same revision passes on a different theme. When you want timed questions, go to the theme-based writing practice set.

Common questions

What makes a karangan point original?

An original point names a specific person, place, action or number that a reader can picture, and explains why it matters to the task. A point that could sit in any essay on education is generic, however correct its language is.

Can I use the same example for education topics and other themes?

A single strong example can serve two essays only if you reshape it to answer each task. Copying it word for word makes the paragraph drift from the question, so always reconnect the example to the exact wording of the task.

Is an invented example allowed in a karangan?

For most karangan tasks, a believable example of an ordinary person or situation is fine. Keep it realistic, avoid naming real individuals, and make sure it supports your point rather than telling a separate story.

How long should one point be?

Aim for one isi, one huraian, one contoh and one kesan, which is usually four to six sentences. Longer paragraphs tend to repeat the isi, so stop when the kesan links back to the task.

If your karangan points stay generic even after revising, a one-to-one BM teacher can read your paragraphs with you and show where a specific example is missing.
