A counterpoint is a point from the other side. It strengthens your essay when it stays on the task and you answer it. It distracts when it opens a new topic.
This is the last lesson in turning a vague essay plan into a relevant argument. If you write discussion essays, also read writing a balanced discussion essay.
How do I test a counterpoint?
Ask two questions.
- Is it about the same party and action as the task?
- Can I answer it in a sentence or two without leaving the theme?
If both answers are yes, keep it. If either is no, cut it or rewrite it.
Worked example: two counterpoints
The task is original: Tulis sebuah ucapan untuk meyakinkan murid supaya menyertai kelab sukan sekolah.
The position: joining a sports club benefits students. Two counterpoints a writer might add:
| Counterpoint | Same party and action? | Answerable in a sentence? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kelab sukan mengambil masa belajar | Yes, it concerns students joining | Yes, by describing scheduling | Keep |
| Kerajaan patut membina lebih banyak stadium | No, the party is the government | No, it opens a new topic | Cut |
The first counterpoint is a real worry a student might have. The second moves the discussion to national policy, which the task did not ask about.
Turning a counterpoint into a concession
Take the first counterpoint and write it in the form concession plus answer:
Memang benar kelab sukan mengambil sebahagian masa petang kita. Namun begitu, latihan yang dijadualkan dua kali seminggu masih meninggalkan ruang untuk mengulang kaji, dan tenaga yang bertambah membantu kita belajar dengan lebih fokus.
The concession shows fairness. The answer pulls the reader back to the writer’s position, so the counterpoint strengthens the argument.
The mistake: balance without direction
A writer who wants to appear balanced might add a long paragraph of counterpoints and never answer them. The reader finishes the paragraph unsure which side the writer is on.
The fix is the “admit and answer” habit. After each counterpoint, write one sentence that begins Namun begitu or Walau bagaimanapun and returns to your position with a reason.
A quick check for any plan
In your plan, mark every counterpoint and write its answer beside it. A counterpoint with no answer is either cut or waiting for one. The claim-evidence revision desk gives space for the counterpoint and its answer side by side.

The task is Tulis rencana untuk menggalakkan murid membawa bekal dari rumah. Which counterpoint should stay?
- (a) Bekal mungkin kurang pilihan berbanding kantin.
- (b) Harga minyak dunia meningkat.
Answer
(a). It concerns students choosing home food, and you can answer it: bekal boleh dirancang dengan pelbagai menu. Option (b) is unrelated to the task and cannot be answered without changing the subject.
