Writing a balanced discussion essay

You list points for and against, but your essay never says which side is stronger.

A discussion essay (perbincangan) weighs two sides and reaches a judgement. Each paragraph needs a claim, evidence, a reason and, at the end, a sentence that weighs one side against the other.

This lesson is part of essay forms and register. If you are not yet sure that the question wants a discussion, read handling factual and explanatory writing tasks for the contrast.

What does balanced reasoning mean?

Balanced does not mean neutral. It means the essay shows both sides fairly and then decides, using reasons the reader can check.

A weak discussion has a “for” section and an “against” section, and then a conclusion that repeats both. A strong one connects the sections with weighing sentences.

Worked example: rebuilding a one-sided paragraph

Take this original task: Bincangkan sama ada sekolah patut melarang telefon pintar sepenuhnya.

A first draft paragraph argues only for the ban:

Telefon pintar mengganggu tumpuan murid. Murid bermain permainan dalam kelas. Jadi sekolah patut melarangnya.

The claim is clear, but there is no counterpoint and no reason. Rebuild the paragraph with the frame claim, evidence, reason, weighing.

Part Sentence

The weighing sentence is the new part. It admits the benefit of phones, then decides which side is stronger and under what condition.

The mistake that flattens a discussion

The common slip is to write “Walau bagaimanapun” and then start a new list of points. The connector suggests contrast, but no judgement follows.

The fix is to end each pair of paragraphs with one sentence that answers “so which matters more, and why?” If the sentence could be deleted without changing the argument, it is not a weighing sentence yet.

Planning the whole essay

Use a simple plan: an opening that states the issue and your position, two or three points for, one or two points against, each followed by a weighing sentence, and a conclusion that restates the judgement.

Make every point answer the question as worded. The claim-evidence revision desk gives you a place to check that each part is present.

Check yourself

Write a weighing sentence for the task Bincangkan sama ada murid patut diberi kerja rumah setiap hari, given these two points: homework builds revision habits, and daily homework leaves little rest.

Answer

A possible sentence: Walaupun kerja rumah membina tabiat mengulang kaji, tugasan setiap hari boleh menghilangkan masa rehat, maka jumlahnya perlu dihadkan supaya manfaatnya tidak hilang.

It names both points, states which one decides the matter and gives the condition. A sentence that only says “kedua-duanya penting” does not weigh anything.

What to study next

Move on to developing a narrative with a clear sequence, then test yourself with the practice set.

Keep a list of your own one-sided paragraphs in the mistake log tool. If you want a teacher to read your discussion essays, see online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition.

Common questions

Do I have to give both sides equal space?

Give both sides real development, but you may spend more space on the side you judge stronger. The essay must show that you considered the other side and explain why it carries less weight.

Where do I state my opinion?

State a clear position in the opening, then confirm it in the conclusion. Between those two points, use weighing sentences so the judgement is earned by the reasoning, not announced.

Can I agree with both sides partly?

Yes, if the reasoning supports it. A position such as 'the idea helps under one condition' is a proper judgement, as long as you name the condition and show why it matters.

What is the difference between evidence and a reason?

Evidence is the example or fact. The reason explains why that example supports the point. A paragraph with evidence but no reason leaves the reader to guess the link.

If your discussion essays read as two separate lists, one-to-one lessons let a teacher show you where to place the weighing sentence on your own paragraphs.
