Bahasa Melayu · Essay task interpretation

Identifying kehendak soalan before writing

You begin writing as soon as you see the topic, and the question is only half answered.

Kehendak soalan is what the question requires of you. Before you write a word, find four signals in it: the form, the audience, the theme and the action.

This lesson starts the essay task interpretation route. Next comes separating theme from task and audience.

What are the four signals?

Each signal answers one question about the task.

  • Form: what kind of text am I writing (surat, ucapan, rencana, laporan)?
  • Audience: who will read or hear it?
  • Theme: what subject is it about?
  • Action: what must I do with the theme (huraikan, cadangkan, bincangkan)?

If you can fill in all four in a few words, you know what the essay must be.

Worked example: underlining a question

Here is an original question: Tulis sebuah rencana untuk majalah sekolah tentang kepentingan menjimatkan air. Huraikan langkah yang boleh diambil oleh murid.

Signal In the question
Form rencana
Audience pembaca majalah sekolah
Theme kepentingan menjimatkan air
Action huraikan langkah oleh murid

The plan that follows from this table has a short opening on why saving water matters, then three explained steps that students themselves can take, such as closing taps tightly and reporting leaks. A closing paragraph invites readers to act.

The mistake: writing on the theme only

A student who sees “air” may write about river pollution, water shortages and the dangers of drought. The essay is full of facts about water.

But the question asked for langkah oleh murid. Facts about shortages are the background, not the answer. The fix is to read the action and the party together, and to ask after each paragraph: is this a step a student can take?

Reading Essay focus Answers the task?
Theme only Water problems in the country No
Theme and action Steps students can take to save water Yes

A habit that takes two minutes

  1. Read the question once for the general idea.
  2. Read it again and underline the four signals in four different ways.
  3. Write a one-line plan that uses all four.
  4. Only then start the opening.

Use the BM essay plan builder to record the four signals. After each practice essay, use the mistake log tool to note which signal you missed.

Find the four signals in this question: Tulis sebuah surat kepada pengurus kedai buku untuk mencadangkan diskaun bagi pelajar.

Answer
  • Form: surat (a formal letter).
  • Audience: pengurus kedai buku.
  • Theme: diskaun bagi pelajar.
  • Action: mencadangkan, so the letter proposes and gives reasons.

The letter should address the manager formally and justify the proposal. An essay about why students need books, without a proposal to the manager, misses the action and the audience.

What to study next

Continue with separating theme from task and audience. Then test the skill on the essay task interpretation practice set.

Common questions

What does kehendak soalan mean?

It means what the question requires: the form, the audience, the theme and the action you must take. It is broader than the topic, because two questions on the same topic can require very different essays.

Which word in the question matters most?

The verb that tells you what to do, such as huraikan, cadangkan or nyatakan, decides the shape of the answer. Next come the words naming the reader and the form.

Can I change the form if I am more comfortable with another?

No. The form is part of the requirement. A letter answered as an article answers a different question, however good the content is.

How do I practise this without writing full essays?

Take any karangan question, underline the four signals and write a one-line plan. Doing this for five questions takes less time than one essay and builds the habit quickly.

If you realise halfway through that the essay is about the wrong thing, one-to-one lessons let a teacher watch you read a question and stop you at the exact word you skipped.
