The theme is the subject of the essay. The task is what you must do with it, and the audience is who you do it for. Two questions can share a theme and still need very different essays.
This lesson follows identifying kehendak soalan within the essay task interpretation route.
Why does the same theme need different essays?
The audience decides what to include and how to say it. A reader who can act on your request needs different content from a reader who simply wants information.
Think of your theme as raw material. The task and audience decide which material you use and how you shape it.
Worked example: one theme, three openings
The theme is penggunaan basikal ke sekolah. Here are three original tasks.
| Task | Audience | Opening that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ucapan di perhimpunan | Murid sekolah | Rakan-rakan sekalian, pernahkah anda menghitung berapa lama kita terperangkap dalam kesesakan pagi? |
| Surat kepada pengetua | Pihak pentadbir | Saya ingin mencadangkan agar sekolah menyediakan tempat letak basikal yang selamat. |
| Rencana untuk majalah | Pembaca umum | Basikal semakin popular sebagai pengangkutan ke sekolah, dan sebab-sebabnya mudah difahami. |
The facts may overlap: cycling saves money, improves health and reduces traffic. But the speech uses the facts to persuade peers, the letter uses them to justify a request and the article uses them to inform.
The mistake: one essay for every task
A student who has learned an excellent essay on cycling might use it for all three tasks. The opening greets nobody, the tone fits no one and the action is missing.
The fix is to separate the file into two piles: theme material (facts, examples, vocabulary) and task shape (opening, tone, closing). Reuse the first pile and rebuild the second for each question.
A test for your content
For each point in your plan, ask two questions.
- Does this belong to the theme? (cycling, health, cost)
- Does it help this reader do or think what the task asks?
A point that passes only the first question is theme material the task did not need. Drop it or rework it.
Use the BM essay plan builder to list theme material on one side and the task shape on the other.
Check yourself
Theme: membaca akhbar. Write the opening sentence for (a) a speech to classmates, (b) a letter to the librarian asking for a newspaper corner.
Answer
(a) Saudara-saudari sekalian, bilakah kali terakhir anda membaca akhbar sehingga habis? It greets the audience and opens with a question.
(b) Saya menulis untuk mencadangkan agar perpustakaan menyediakan sudut akhbar harian. It states the purpose politely and formally.
The facts about newspapers could be the same in both. The opening reveals which reader and task the student is writing for.

Continue with planning a response from stimulus materials, then test yourself with the practice set.
