A coherent paragraph has one main idea and every sentence supports it. Start with the main idea, add two details and close by returning to the idea.
This lesson is part of the SPM Arabic subject guide. It follows planning a short response.
What does a coherent paragraph look like?
Use four slots.
| Slot | Job | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Topic sentence | أحبُّ يومَ الجمعةِ |
| 2 | First detail | أستيقظُ متأخّرًا وأتناولُ الفطورَ مع عائلتي |
| 3 | Second detail | بعد ذلك أزورُ جدّتي في القريةِ |
| 4 | Closing line | ولذلك يومُ الجمعةِ أجملُ أيّامِ الأسبوعِ عندي |
Each line supports the topic sentence, and the connectors بعد ذلك and ولذلك show the order and the reason.
Worked example: from scattered sentences to one paragraph
A learner writes four correct sentences:
أحبُّ يومَ الجمعةِ. المدرسةُ كبيرةٌ. أزورُ جدّتي. أقرأُ في المكتبةِ.
The grammar is fine, but the ideas pull in different directions. To repair it:
- Keep the topic sentence: أحبُّ يومَ الجمعةِ.
- Remove the sentence that does not support it: المدرسةُ كبيرةٌ.
- Connect the two that remain with time and reason words.
Result: أحبُّ يومَ الجمعةِ. أزورُ جدّتي في الصباحِ، وبعد ذلك أقرأُ في المكتبةِ. ولذلك هو يومي المفضّلُ.
“I love Friday. I visit my grandmother in the morning, and after that I read in the library. So it is my favourite day.”
A common mistake: the paragraph that changes topic
The sentence “The school is big” is correct Arabic, but it does not belong to a paragraph about Friday. Correct grammar does not save a sentence from being off-topic.
| Test | Keep the sentence if |
|---|---|
| Does it support the topic sentence? | Yes, it adds a detail about the same idea |
| Does it use the same time or person? | Yes, it matches the rest |
If the answer is no to either question, delete or rewrite it.
A quick check for the closing line
The closing line should repeat the main idea in new words. Avoid starting a new idea in the last sentence, because the paragraph then feels unfinished.
Check yourself
The sentences below do not form a paragraph. Identify the one that does not belong, and write a closing line.
أحبُّ الرياضةَ. ألعبُ كرةَ القدمِ مع أصدقائي. الطقسُ حارٌّ اليومَ. أجري في الحديقةِ كلَّ صباحٍ.
Answer
الطقسُ حارٌّ اليومَ does not belong. It talks about today’s weather, while the others describe your sport habits.
A closing line: ولذلك الرياضةُ مهمّةٌ في حياتي. “So sport is important in my life.”
With the odd sentence removed, the paragraph has four lines about one idea and ends by returning to it.
What to study next
Move to connecting paragraphs into an original response, and review your connectors in choosing a connector for a stated relationship.
