Choosing a useful Science lesson focus

Compare four focuses for Science tuition and pick what your child should work on first.

The most useful Science focus is the one matched to where marks are actually lost, not the chapter that looks biggest in the textbook. Here are four common focuses and the sign that each one fits.

Which focus matches which problem?

Focus Sign it fits What lessons practise
Concept repair Wrong answers on definitions and “what happens when” Rebuilding one idea at a time with a simple example
Data and graphs Marks lost when a table or graph is given Saying what a pattern shows, and what it does not
Explanation writing Right idea, but the answer gets half marks Linking cause, process and effect in a full sentence
Calculations Good concepts, but numbers and units go wrong Choosing the formula, then checking units

Most students have one main focus and one secondary one. Picking the main one first keeps the early lessons from feeling like the whole syllabus at once.

How do I find the real problem?

Look at the last two or three papers and sort each lost mark into one of the four rows. The count usually points clearly to one row.

The free prerequisite gap finder can help when the problem looks like an earlier skill, such as fractions behind a rate calculation. For students who read the question wrongly, the guide to Science question vocabulary is worth an evening on its own.

What if the main problem is the exam, not the topic?

Some students know the content and lose marks by the way they answer. A teacher can work on answer shape, such as the state, explain and compare commands, using the student’s own past answers.

For a student like this, the focus might be “explanation writing” even though every chapter feels familiar. The connecting numbers, diagrams and prose guide shows what that looks like.

What should the trial lesson test?

The trial is a real one-hour lesson, from RM50. Bring a few wrong answers and let the teacher choose the first question. Afterwards, ask whether the focus felt right and what the next two lessons would cover.

The after-trial reflection and discussion checklist gives you questions to use. Start from the online one-to-one SPM Science tuition page if you want to see how enquiring works, and read what to do after a trial lesson before you decide.

When is another option better?

If the student has not yet read the chapter at all, a few evenings with the free Science learning guide may be enough before any tuition. Tuition is most useful once the student has attempted questions and has wrong answers to work from.

Common questions

Do we have to choose one focus before the trial?

No. A best guess is enough. The teacher will watch the student work during the trial and may suggest a different focus, which you then agree directly with the teacher.

What should we bring to the first lesson?

Two or three recent Science questions the student got wrong, with the student's own working or answer written out. Wrong answers show the teacher much more than the marks alone.

Can the focus change later?

Yes. A student may start with concepts and move to data questions, or the reverse. The focus is reviewed with the teacher as marks and confidence change.
