Choosing a useful Accounting tuition focus

You have decided to try Accounting tuition and cannot tell which topic to start with.

The most useful Accounting lesson focus is the earliest step where the student makes an error. Four common focuses are below, each with a sign that it fits.

Which focus fits which situation?

Focus Sign it fits What the lessons do
Recording and double entry Debits and credits swap sides in new questions Rebuild the two-sided habit with short transaction sets
Adjustments A full question goes right until accruals, prepayments or depreciation appear Use timelines to decide which period each amount belongs to
Financial statements The figures are right but land in the wrong place Sort each item by statement and section
Exam technique The student knows the topic but runs out of time or skips steps Practise full questions and review where time went

A student usually has one main focus and one smaller one. Choose the main one first.

How can you check which one it is?

Do this self-check before you enquire.

  1. Attempt a question on journals and ledgers with no year-end items. Note where errors appear.
  2. Attempt a question with one accrual and one prepayment. Note whether the profit figure changes correctly.
  3. Attempt a sole trader statement question. Note whether each item sits in the right statement.

The prerequisite gap finder can point to an earlier skill that is missing. The structured-answer self-review helps you look at your own working.

What if the errors look random?

Random-looking errors usually come from one habit, such as recording a transaction without stating which accounts change. A teacher who watches you work notices that habit quickly, because the pattern shows in the working, not in the answer.

Free lessons on correction of errors show the common types. They give you words to describe your own mistakes to the teacher.

Is a balanced trial balance a sign you are fine?

No. A trial balance can balance while an entry is missing or recorded in the wrong account, because the debit and credit totals still match. That is why the lesson focus should come from the reasoning behind entries, not from whether the totals agree.

The lesson page on why a balanced trial balance can still contain errors works through an example.

What happens next?

Once you have a likely focus, tell us on WhatsApp. We assign an experienced Accounting teacher and arrange the one-hour trial class (from RM50), where the first hour tests that focus on real questions.

Common questions

Should the first lessons follow the school syllabus order?

They can, if the student is comfortable with earlier topics. If recurring entries still confuse them, going back to double entry first usually saves time later, because adjustments and statements depend on it.

How do I know if the problem is adjustments or the basics?

Try a full journal and ledger question without adjustments. If that goes smoothly and the marks fall only when year-end items appear, adjustments are the focus. If errors start earlier, the basics come first.

Can the focus change after a few lessons?

Yes. The focus is agreed with the teacher and can shift as the student improves. Reviewing it every few lessons keeps the time on what still costs marks.

What if the student is unsure about everything?

Then the teacher chooses the earliest topic where the student makes an error and starts there. One rebuilt topic is a better start than a scattered tour of all of them.

Bring two recent Accounting questions you lost marks on and name the entry where you got stuck. A one-to-one teacher can work out the focus from that in the first lesson.
