Related concepts become easier to separate when you ask what each one answers. For akidah, syariah and akhlak, the working questions are what is believed, what is practised, and how a person behaves.
This lesson is part of SPM subjects and learning resources. The definitions here are plain working summaries, so always confirm exact wording against your current textbook and your teacher.
What question does each term answer?
| Term | Working question | Short example |
|---|---|---|
| Akidah | What does a person believe? | Believing that Allah sees everything a person does. |
| Syariah | What is practised or followed as guidance? | Observing the rules for fair dealing in trade. |
| Akhlak | How does a person behave and treat others? | Being honest, patient and polite in daily life. |
The three are connected, but an exam question usually picks one. Reading for the question word comes first.
Worked example: an original scenario
Hana is a student helper at the school bookshop. A younger student pays with a RM10 note and Hana gives change for RM5 by mistake. Hana notices, calls the student back and corrects it.
Which term does each sentence use?
- “Hana believes her actions are known to Allah even when no one checks.” This answers what is believed: akidah.
- “Hana follows the guidance to be fair and accurate in dealing.” This answers what is practised: syariah.
- “Hana is honest and corrects the mistake politely.” This answers how she behaves: akhlak.
Same scenario, three different questions. The best answer depends on which one the question asks.
Blurred and separated answers
Suppose the question is: Explain how the scenario shows akhlak.
| Version | Text | Problem or strength |
|---|---|---|
| Blurred | “Hana is a Muslim so she has akidah and syariah and akhlak, and she returned the money.” | Lists all three terms with no link to the scenario. |
| Separated | “The scenario shows akhlak because Hana calls the student back and corrects the change politely. Her honesty and courtesy are the behaviour the term describes.” | Names one term, uses a detail and explains. |
The mistake to avoid
Students sometimes write every term they can remember in the hope that one of them is right. The reader can tell that nothing has been explained.
Choose the one term the question asks for, quote one detail and say how it shows that term.

Original scenario: Faiz finishes his group work early and offers to help a classmate who is struggling, speaking kindly and without mocking. Which of the three terms does this best illustrate, and why? Answer in two sentences.
Answer
It best illustrates akhlak, since the scenario describes how Faiz behaves toward a classmate: helpful, kind and respectful.
A sample: “Faiz’s offer of help and his kind way of speaking show akhlak, because the term is about good character in dealing with others.” If your textbook gives a different framing, use its wording and check with your teacher.
What to study next
Apply the concept to an example in connecting an example with a reviewed principle. For how to check terms against dependable sources, see reviewing terminology using qualified sources. The structured-answer self-review tool helps check that your answer names one term and supports it.
