A link between paragraphs should move the reader forward. When a link only restates the last idea, the essay circles instead of progressing.
This lesson is part of SPM Tamil writing and development. It follows developing one point with a worked example.
What makes a good link between paragraphs?
A good link does two things in one sentence: it names the idea you just finished and introduces the new one. The pattern is “not only the last idea, but also the next idea”.
In Tamil this can sound like: “சொல்வளத்துடன் மட்டுமல்லாமல், வாசிப்பு சிந்தனை ஆற்றலையும் வளர்க்கிறது.” The first half points back and the second half points forward.
Worked example: a repeating link and a progressing link
Question: “மாணவர்களுக்கு நூல் வாசிப்பு ஏன் அவசியம்?” Paragraph 1 is about vocabulary, and paragraph 2 is about thinking.
Repeating link (weak):
வாசிப்பு நல்லது. வாசிப்பு மிகவும் நல்லது. அது மாணவர்களுக்குப் பல நன்மைகளைத் தருகிறது.
In English: Reading is good. Reading is very good. It gives students many benefits.
This link says the same thing three times. The reader learns nothing new, and the essay has not moved.
Progressing link (strong):
சொல்வளத்துடன் மட்டுமல்லாமல், வாசிப்பு சிந்தனை ஆற்றலையும் வளர்க்கிறது. கதையில் ஒரு சிக்கல் வரும்போது, அடுத்து என்ன நடக்கும் என்று வாசகர் யோசிக்கிறார்.
The first sentence names vocabulary (the last idea) and introduces thinking (the new idea). The second sentence starts developing the new idea at once.
Choosing the relationship
Before writing a link, decide how the new paragraph relates to the last one. The relationship decides the wording.
| Relationship | Useful Tamil link | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| Adds another benefit | மட்டுமல்லாமல், … ம் | Vocabulary and then thinking |
| Gives a result | இதனால் | Better thinking gives better essays |
| Contrasts | ஆனால் / இருப்பினும் | Benefit, then a limit |
| Moves to a new stage | அடுத்ததாக | From causes to solutions |
Pick the relationship first and the word second. A connector chosen without a relationship sounds decorative.
The mistake to avoid
The common mistake is opening every paragraph with the same connector, such as “மேலும்”, followed by a sentence that still repeats the last idea. The essay reads like a list of similar statements.
The repair is to give each paragraph its own job in the plan. If paragraph 2 has the job “thinking”, the link can name the job, and repetition becomes impossible.
Plan the jobs first
Before writing, list each paragraph with a single job word: for example சொல்வளம் (vocabulary), சிந்தனை (thinking), மன அமைதி (calm mind). When the jobs are different, the links write themselves.
Check the plan by asking one question of each paragraph: what does this one say that the others do not?
Check yourself
Write a bridge sentence to move from a paragraph about thinking (சிந்தனை) to a paragraph about a calm mind (மன அமைதி).
Answer
One good version: சிந்தனையைக் கூர்மையாக்குவதோடு, வாசிப்பு மன அமைதியையும் தருகிறது.
It names the last idea (சிந்தனை), then introduces the new one (மன அமைதி). Another acceptable version begins with அடுத்ததாக. Reject any version that repeats “வாசிப்பு நல்லது” without naming the new idea.
What to study next
Continue with revising an introduction and conclusion for relevance, then test the cluster with the writing and development practice set.
