Connectors for cause, contrast and sequence

Your Tamil sentences are correct one by one, yet they read like a list of separate facts.

A connector tells the reader how two ideas relate. Cause, contrast and sequence need different words, and a wrong choice changes the meaning.

This lesson is part of sentence construction. It follows building a clear sentence.

How do I choose a connector?

Ask one question: how does the second idea relate to the first? If it follows from the first, it is cause. If it goes against the first, it is contrast. If it comes after the first in time, it is sequence.

Relationship Tamil connectors Meaning
Cause -ததால், ஏனெனில், ஆகையால் because, therefore
Contrast ஆனால், -தபோதிலும் but, even though
Sequence முதலில், பிறகு, கடைசியாக first, then, finally

Worked example: one pair, three meanings

Take மழை பெய்தது (it rained) and போட்டி நடைபெற்றது (the match was held). Different connectors give different relationships.

Contrast: மழை பெய்தபோதிலும் போட்டி நடைபெற்றது. Even though it rained, the match was held.

Cause (with a different second idea): மழை பெய்ததால் போட்டி ஒத்திவைக்கப்பட்டது. Because it rained, the match was postponed.

Sequence: முதலில் மாணவர்கள் வரிசையில் நின்றனர்; பிறகு தலைமையாசிரியர் உரையாற்றினார். First the students stood in line; then the headmaster spoke.

The connector carries the relationship. A reader cannot guess whether rain stopped the match or did not, without it.

The mistake that costs marks

The common slip is to use ஆனால் for every link. It turns a cause into a contrast and changes the meaning.

Intended meaning Written Problem
He worked hard, so he won. அவன் கடுமையாக உழைத்தான். ஆனால் வெற்றி பெற்றான். ஆனால் says “but”, which suggests winning was unexpected
He worked hard, so he won. அவன் கடுமையாக உழைத்ததால் வெற்றி பெற்றான். The cause ending fits

A second slip is to use ஏனெனில் at the start of a sentence with no result before it. It needs an effect first, so write the result and then the reason.

Check yourself

Join அவன் கடுமையாக உழைத்தான் and அவன் வெற்றி பெற்றான் as cause and effect.

Then change the first part to அவன் உடல்நலம் குன்றியிருந்தான் (he was in poor health) and join them as contrast.

Answer

Cause: அவன் கடுமையாக உழைத்ததால் வெற்றி பெற்றான். (Because he worked hard, he won.)

Contrast: அவன் உடல்நலம் குன்றியிருந்தபோதிலும் வெற்றி பெற்றான். (Even though he was in poor health, he won.)

Both sentences end with the same result, “he won”, yet the meaning changes because the first part and the connector change.

What to study next

The next lesson is comparing two sentence structures and their effects. For a whole-paragraph view, the SPM Bahasa Tamil guide shows how connectors build a paragraph.

Common questions

What is the difference between ஆனால் and -ததால்?

ஆனால் (but) joins two sentences that contrast. The ending -ததால் (because) joins a cause to its effect inside one sentence. Choose by asking whether the second idea goes against the first or follows from it.

Can I start a sentence with ஆனால்?

Yes. Begin the second sentence with ஆனால் when the two ideas clash. In a formal piece, joining the two with -தபோதிலும் inside one sentence can read more smoothly.

Which words show sequence?

முதலில் (first), பிறகு (then), அடுத்து (next) and கடைசியாக (finally) mark order. Use each one once so the order is easy to follow.

How many connectors should a paragraph have?

Use one where the relationship is not obvious, and vary the kind. The same connector in every sentence sounds mechanical.

If your paragraphs read as a list of separate sentences, one-to-one Tamil lessons let a teacher show which connector each of your own sentence pairs needs.
