To sequence negotiations and cooperation, ask what each event depended on, then join the events with words that show cause. The order that results is an argument, not just a list.
This lesson opens steps towards independence. The general method is in building a chronology without memorising disconnected dates.
What is the difference between negotiation and cooperation?
A negotiation is a formal exchange in which groups bargain toward an agreement. Cooperation is joint action, such as parties agreeing to stand together in an election.
Keep the two apart in your notes. Cooperation can build the trust that formal negotiation needs, so the two lines are linked.
The three-question ordering test
Take any two events and ask three questions. The answers tell you which comes first and why.
- What did the later event need before it could happen?
- Did the earlier event supply it: a rule, an agreement or trust?
- Which link word describes the connection?
If the answer to question 2 is yes, the earlier event caused or allowed the later one. If it is no, the two events may sit on separate lines.
Worked example: from 1949 to Merdeka
These real events are listed in random order: (a) the Alliance wins 51 of 52 elected seats, (b) the Communities Liaison Committee meets, (c) UMNO and MCA cooperate in the Kuala Lumpur municipal election, (d) the Reid Commission is appointed, (e) independence is achieved.
Apply the test. The committee (b) brought community leaders together in 1949 1, which prepared the trust for UMNO and MCA to cooperate in 1952 (c) 2. Their success led to a national Alliance Party in September 1953 2 and to the 1955 landslide (a) 4. That mandate made the demand for independence credible, so the Reid Commission was formed in March 1956 to draft a constitution (d), and independence followed on 31 August 1957 (e) 3.
| Order | Event | Link to the next |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Communities Liaison Committee, 1949 | so leaders had a record of working together |
| 2 | UMNO and MCA cooperate in the 1952 KL election | which grew into the Alliance |
| 3 | Alliance wins 51 of 52 elected seats, 1955 | as a result, it spoke for the country in talks |
| 4 | Reid Commission appointed, 1956 | which drafted the constitution |
| 5 | Independence, 31 August 1957 | end of this chain |
Your textbook may add steps, such as the Baling Talks or the 1956 London talks, so extend the table with those.
The mistake that breaks the chain
The common slip is to write the events correctly but join them all with “then”. “The committee met, then UMNO and MCA cooperated, then the Alliance won, then independence came.”
The order is right, but the reader cannot see why each step happened. Replace each “then” with a reason: “The committee showed that leaders of different communities could work together, so UMNO and MCA were ready to cooperate in 1952.”
Check yourself
Put these in order and write one link word between each pair: (a) the Alliance wins 51 of 52 seats, (b) UMNO and MCA cooperate in the 1952 Kuala Lumpur election, (c) the national Alliance Party is formed.
Answer
The order is (b), (c), (a) 2 4. The local election cooperation came first, the national Alliance Party was formed in 1953, and the 1955 landslide followed.
A full sequence: “UMNO and MCA cooperated in 1952, so the partnership grew into the national Alliance Party in 1953, and as a result the Alliance went into the 1955 election as a three-party coalition and won 51 of 52 seats.”
What to study next
Once the order is clear, look at why each body in the sequence was formed. Continue with explaining the purpose of representative committees, and then test the chapter with the practice set.
The timeline and sequence practice tool lets you rebuild a shuffled order on your own. For a teacher to check your sequences, see online one-to-one Sejarah tuition.
