Sejarah · Federation developments in 1948

The background of federation formation

You know a federation was formed, but you cannot explain what led to it.

To explain why the federation was formed, show how an earlier arrangement met objections and how those objections led to a new one. Use a chain of problem, reaction and response.

This lesson opens the federation developments in 1948 cluster. Your textbook supplies further names and dates, and this lesson gives the structure.

What is the problem, reaction, response chain?

Write three linked sentences.

  1. Problem: what the earlier arrangement did or proposed.
  2. Reaction: how groups responded and why.
  3. Response: what was changed as a result.

Each link uses a connecting word: “because” between problem and reaction, “so” between reaction and response.

Worked example: the Malayan Union and the federation

Problem: the Malayan Union, introduced on 1 April 1946, took away the Malay Rulers’ power to rule and gave citizenship widely, including to immigrants who had lived there for more than 10 years 3.

Reaction: Malays objected because they felt the changes weakened the Rulers and their own position. UMNO was declared on 11 May 1946 under Dato’ Onn Jaafar to lead the opposition 1.

Response: the British reached a new agreement with the Rulers. Nine State Agreements were signed on 21 January 1948 4 and the Federation of Malaya was proclaimed on 1 February 1948 5, restoring the Rulers’ sovereignty and tightening the conditions for citizenship 2.

Written answer: “The Malayan Union took away the Rulers’ power to rule and gave citizenship widely. Malays objected because they felt their position was weakened, and UMNO was formed to lead the opposition. As a result, the British agreed to the Federation of Malaya in 1948, which restored the Rulers’ sovereignty.”

The mistake that costs marks

The slip is to list events without links: “The Malayan Union was proposed. There was opposition. The federation was formed.” The reader sees three facts but no reasons.

The repair is to add a reason word between each event.

List Chain
Proposal, opposition, federation. The Union reduced the Rulers’ powers, so Malays objected through UMNO, and the talks that followed led to the federation.

Write a three-sentence chain for this scenario: a school changes its uniform rule without asking parents, parents object and the school revises the rule after a meeting.

Answer

“The school changed the uniform rule without asking parents. Parents objected because they had no chance to speak. As a result, the school held a meeting and revised the rule.”

The answer has a problem, a reaction with a reason and a response.

What to study next

Next, learn what the new arrangement contained in identifying important institutional features. Plan with the Sejarah evidence-to-explanation planner.

Common questions

What led to the 1948 federation?

The Malayan Union of 1946 met strong objections from Malays, who felt it reduced the Rulers' powers and made citizenship too easy. UMNO led the opposition, and the federation replaced the Union. Learn the objections and responses your textbook names.

Who was involved?

Learn the groups your textbook lists, such as the British government, the Malay Rulers and Malay organisations like UMNO. For each, note what they wanted and what they did.

Should I include dates?

Include the few dates your textbook treats as anchors, and use them to show the order. Do not list dates without a reason.

If your background answers are a list of events, a one-to-one Sejarah teacher can help you link them as problem, reaction and response, using your own textbook notes.
