Good Science revision material matches your syllabus, explains its answers and uses original questions. A five-check test takes ten minutes and works for books, videos and websites.
This page supports SPM Science. For a revision routine, see the Science revision hub, and confirm exam details on the official site through the exam guide.
What does the problem look like in your words?
You might say: “I bought three books and they disagree.” Or: “The video is very confident, but my teacher said the answer is different.” Or as a parent: “I cannot tell if the material is right, and I do not want to waste my child’s time.”
These worries are sensible. Revision material varies in quality, and nobody can check every page.
What are the five checks?
- Syllabus fit: does it follow SPM Sains, the topic list your school uses? Material for the separate pure sciences may go deeper.
- Explained answers: does each answer show the working and the reason, not only a letter?
- Original questions: are the questions written for learning, not copied from somewhere else?
- Honest claims: does it avoid promises such as promised exam questions or guaranteed grades?
- Checkable: can you verify a fact in your textbook or on an official website?
Score each check as yes or no. Material that passes four or five is a good candidate. Material that fails the honest claims check is not worth your time, whatever else it offers.
A worked comparison
Two sources answer the same question: “Explain why the dam wall is thicker at the bottom.”
Source A gives only: “Answer: pressure.” It passes none of the answer checks, since you cannot tell what the word refers to or how to use it in a sentence.
Source B gives: “Liquid pressure increases with depth. The water at the bottom pushes harder on the wall, so the wall is thicker to withstand the larger pressure.” It passes the explained-answers check, and you can test it against your textbook.
Source B also teaches you the shape of a two-mark answer. With Source A, you would learn a word and lose the reasoning marks.
Practical things to try this week
- Pick one topic and run the five checks on your current material.
- Do five questions from each source, then mark yourself against the explained answers.
- Note any disagreement and check it against your textbook.
- Use the official exam preparation checklist to confirm the current format on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website.
Keep one source per topic. Switching between three books loses time without adding coverage.
How should a parent judge the material?
You do not need to know the Science to judge the material. Check whether the answers explain why, whether the topic list matches the school scheme of work, and whether the claims are modest.
If your child can explain an answer back to you in their own words, the material is working.
When might one-to-one tuition be worth considering?
Material can teach content, but it cannot read a student’s written answers. If a student completes the questions and still loses marks, a teacher can mark a few answers and show what is missing.
If that would help, see online one-to-one Science tuition and mention the material you are using and the form.
