Good SPM Science answers come from reading what the question asks, using the data it supplies, and giving a reason for every claim. This page covers those habits. For the paper structure, use the official source below.
For the current format, marks and language options, check the Lembaga Peperiksaan website at lp.moe.gov.my and the notices from your school. Curriculum documents are published by Bahagian Pembangunan Kurikulum at bpk.moe.gov.my.
What do the command words ask for?
The first word of a question tells you the shape of the answer. A student who writes an explanation for a “state” question wastes time, and one who writes a list for an “explain” question loses marks.
| Command word | What to write |
|---|---|
| State, name | A short fact or term, no reason needed |
| Describe | What happens or what the pattern is, in order |
| Explain | What happens and why, with linking words such as because and so |
| Compare | Similarities or differences on the same criterion, side by side |
| Calculate | Formula or working, then the answer with its unit |
| Suggest | A sensible idea using the information given, with a reason |
| Evaluate | Benefit, limit and a conclusion that follows from them |
Underline the command word on your paper before you start. It takes two seconds and prevents the most common mismatch.
How do I answer data questions?
Use three steps: quote, compare, limit. Quote the relevant values, compare them with a number such as the difference, and state what the data does not show.
Consider this example. A table shows a pond’s pH falling from 6.8 to 5.9 over four weeks.
The supported answer is “pH fell by 0.9, so the pond became more acidic”. An over-claimed answer is “acid rain killed the pond plants”, because the table shows neither the cause nor any plants. Markers reward the first answer and give nothing for the second.
How do I give reasons that score?
Write one idea per sentence and join the ideas with because, so or as a result. A chain such as source, change, effect is easier to mark than one long sentence.
Keep units with every calculated value, and show the formula line, since working marks depend on it. Practise with the units and significant-figure checker if unit errors keep appearing.
How should I use practice?
Practise in short, honest sessions. Attempt a question without notes, compare your answer with the marking points, and record the step that failed: reading, recall, calculation or wording.
The timed original practice session builder sets this up. Pair it with the mistake log and paper-error review so the pattern of errors becomes visible.
Where to go next
The SPM Science learning guide lists every topic cluster, and the Science glossary defines the terms markers expect. For a structured revision order, see Science revision.
If you would like a teacher to read your written answers and explain what each question was asking, see online one-to-one Science tuition. The one-hour trial class (from RM50) is a real taught lesson on the topic you choose.
