Form 4 Science is where the reading habits are built: what a table says, which variable changed, and what a conclusion is allowed to claim. This page shows how to group the topic clusters and where a new Form 4 student can begin.
Schools arrange chapters in their own order, so follow your school’s scheme of work for what falls in Form 4. The Form 5 route continues from here, and the main SPM Science guide holds every cluster.
How do the Science clusters group together?
Think of three strands, plus a group on using science to judge real decisions. Each cluster opens into its own lessons and practice.
- Living things and health: body coordination, genetics, microorganisms and nutrition and food technology.
- Matter and materials: elements and materials, carbon compounds and rates of reaction.
- Force, light and energy: force and motion, force and pressure and light and optics.
- Science in decisions: green technology and environmental sustainability.
Within a strand, read the lessons in the listed order. Across strands, follow your class.
Why read the table before answering?
Here is an illustrative example. Two cups of water start at 90 °C. Cup A has a lid, cup B does not, and both are in the same room.
| Time (min) | Cup A (°C) | Cup B (°C) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 90 | 90 |
| 10 | 78 | 72 |
| 20 | 69 | 60 |
A student who jumps to an answer writes “lids make water cool”. A student who reads the table first notices that the lid is the only changed variable, and that cup B fell 30 °C in 20 minutes while cup A fell 21 °C. The better answer is “the water with a lid cooled more slowly, because the lid reduced heat loss to the air.”
Name the changed variable, quote the numbers and give a reason. Every cluster rewards this habit.
Who should start where?
If you are new to Science answers, begin with identifying variables and fair comparisons. If your gap is vocabulary, use the Science glossary alongside each chapter.
If calculations feel shaky, read science calculations when mathematics is a weak area before the force and reaction clusters.
If you want a teacher to build this route around your own gaps, see online one-to-one Science tuition.
