These eight questions follow the order of the lessons. Write each answer with units before opening the explanation.
The set covers body-parameter measurement concepts. The timed practice session builder can help you run it against the clock.
Questions
Question 1 (2 marks). A student counts 20 beats in 15 seconds. Find the pulse rate in beats per minute.
Answer
20 × 4 = 80 beats per minute. There are four 15-second intervals in one minute.
Question 2 (2 marks). A student counts 41 beats in 30 seconds. Find the pulse rate.
Answer
41 × 2 = 82 beats per minute. A 30-second count is doubled.
Question 3 (2 marks). Pulse rates are 78, 80 and 82 beats per minute. Find the mean.
Answer
(78 + 80 + 82) ÷ 3 = 240 ÷ 3 = 80 beats per minute.
Question 4 (2 marks). Give the range of the readings in question 3.
Answer
82 − 78 = 4 beats per minute.
Question 5 (3 marks). Temperature readings are 36.4 °C, 36.6 °C, 36.5 °C and 37.2 °C. The student says the last reading was taken right after a hot drink. Find the mean without that reading and give the reason for excluding it.
Answer
Mean without 37.2: (36.4 + 36.6 + 36.5) ÷ 3 = 109.5 ÷ 3 = 36.5 °C.
The reading was excluded because it was taken right after a hot drink, so the condition was not the same as the other readings.
Question 6 (3 marks). Pulse rises from 70 to 105 beats per minute after exercise. Calculate the percentage increase.
Answer
Increase = 105 − 70 = 35. Percentage = 35 ÷ 70 × 100 = 50%.
Question 7 (2 marks). A line graph shows a temperature rising from 36.5 °C to 37.0 °C over 20 minutes. Write a description of the trend.
Answer
The temperature rises from 36.5 °C to 37.0 °C over 20 minutes, an increase of 0.5 °C.
Question 8 (2 marks). A student concludes from question 6: “Her heart is unhealthy”. Explain why this is not supported.
Answer
The data comes from one activity and shows only that pulse rate was 50% higher after exercise. It cannot show the condition of a person’s health, which needs a qualified health professional and more information.
If you got these wrong
If questions 1 and 2 went wrong, check the counting time and the unit, and go back to reading supplied temperature and pulse data. For questions 3 to 5, revisit interpreting repeated measurements. For question 8, see distinguishing calculations from health assessment.
