Identifying the teaching of a hadith

You can recite the hadith, but when asked what it teaches, your answer wanders.

The teaching of a hadith is the lesson it gives, stated in one sentence. The fastest way to reach it is to find the key word, the action it asks for, and the result it aims at.

This lesson is part of Hadith learning support in SPM Pendidikan Islam. Meanings here follow curriculum level, so confirm them against your prescribed text.

How do I find the teaching?

Use three short steps, in order:

  1. Key word: circle the word in the text that carries the point, such as intention, speech or neighbour.
  2. Action or belief: write the verb the text links to that word, such as guard, honour or intend.
  3. Result: note what the text says follows, if it says anything.

Join the three into one sentence of the form “A person should [action] regarding [key word] so that [result].”

Worked example: a hadith on speech

Take a hadith on speaking well, which your textbook may prescribe. A paraphrase is: a person who believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak what is good or stay silent.

Key word: speech. Action: speak good or stay silent. Result: a person of faith keeps their speech worthy of that faith.

Teaching statement: “A believer should guard speech by saying only what is good, or staying silent, because speech reflects faith.” Check the exact wording and its source with your teacher before you use it in an answer.

The mistake: retelling instead of teaching

Students restate the text and call it the teaching. The marker sees a repeat, not understanding.

Type Example Verdict
Retelling “The hadith says believers should speak good or be silent.” Repeats the text
Teaching “Guard your speech: say what is good, or stay silent, so speech matches faith.” States the lesson with a reason

The second answer turns the text into an instruction. A quick test: can someone act on your sentence? If yes, it is a teaching.

Practising with a second hadith

Choose another hadith from your list and cover the text. Write the key word, the action and the result from memory, then check them. If the result is missing, the text may not state one, so do not invent it. Leave that part out.

A teaching that stays inside the prescribed text is the one a marker can credit.

Check yourself

A prescribed text teaches, in paraphrase, that actions are judged by their intentions. State the teaching in one sentence using the key word, action, result steps.

Answer

Key word: intention. Action: make the intention sincere before an act. Result: the act is judged by that intention.

Model sentence: “A person should make the intention sincere before acting, because actions are judged by their intentions.”

Check the exact wording and narrator attribution with your textbook. The model sentence gives the teaching, not the text.

What to study next

Move on to explaining applications using curriculum context, which turns a teaching into a case. Then try the hadith practice set.

Common questions

What is the difference between the text and the teaching?

The text is what the hadith says. The teaching is the lesson a reader should take from it. A teaching answer is short, in your own words, and names what a person should do or believe.

How long should a teaching statement be?

One sentence is enough for a short question. Give a second sentence only if the question asks for an explanation. A clear single sentence with a verb and an object is stronger than a long paragraph.

Can I use my own words?

Yes, for the teaching. Use the textbook's key terms where they exist, and keep the meaning faithful. If the question asks you to quote the text itself, the wording must follow the prescribed text exactly.

Does this page interpret hadith for me?

No. It teaches how to state, at curriculum level, what your prescribed text teaches. For interpretation beyond the syllabus, ask a qualified teacher.

If your hadith answers retell the text instead of stating the teaching, one-to-one Pendidikan Islam lessons let a teacher mark where your sentence drifts and help you tighten it.
