Which Mathematics topics to revise next?

Every chapter feels equally unfinished, and you cannot tell where an extra hour would help most.

The best next topic to revise is the one where the most lost marks can be recovered in the least time. You can work it out from your own papers in about twenty minutes.

This page sits under SPM Mathematics and works alongside the Mathematics revision hub.

How do I build the ranking?

Take your last two full papers or school tests. For each lost mark, write the topic and the reason: did not know the method, knew it but slipped, or ran out of time.

Then give each topic two numbers from 1 to 3. The first is marks lost (1 is a few, 3 is most of the topic). The second is repair effort (1 means you lose one step, 3 means you cannot start).

Rank by marks lost divided by effort. Highest score first.

Worked example: six topics, one surprise

An original student record after two school tests:

Topic Marks lost Effort Score
Linear inequalities 3 1 3.0
Quadratic equations 3 2 1.5
Matrices 2 1 2.0
Circles and trigonometry 3 3 1.0
Statistics 1 1 1.0
Variation 2 2 1.0

The student felt that circles and trigonometry were the crisis. The ranking puts linear inequalities first, because three marks are lost on one repeated step, choosing the shaded side, and that is a single lesson to fix.

Matrices come second for the same reason. Circles and trigonometry are still on the list, but the ranking says to do them after two quick wins, not before.

What mistake spoils a ranking?

The common one is ranking by feeling. A topic that embarrassed you in class can dominate the list even when it cost only one mark on paper.

Another is listing chapters when the real cause is an earlier skill. If three topics all show lost marks at the algebra step, the real item to rank is algebra repair, not three separate chapters.

A short self-check

Try this now. Write your three highest-scoring topics and, beside each, the first lesson or exercise you will do this week. If you cannot name the exercise, the ranking is not finished.

Log the error reasons in the mistake log tool so the next ranking takes five minutes, not twenty.

When might one-to-one tuition help?

If the ranking shows several topics that all need effort 3, rebuilding alone can stall. A teacher can test which earlier skill is missing and choose an order that is realistic for the months you have left.

You can begin with the one-hour trial class (from RM50), a real taught lesson, and bring your two papers with you. The fee is agreed before the trial, and afterwards you can ask for another teacher if the fit is not right. See SPM Mathematics tuition for how it works.

Common questions

Should I revise my weakest topic first?

Not always. A topic you fail completely may need weeks of rebuilding, while a topic where you lose one step each time can be fixed in an evening. Rank by marks you can regain per hour, not by how bad the topic feels.

How do I know how many marks a topic is worth?

Look at your past papers and your own school tests. Count how many question parts in each topic you attempted and how many marks you lost. Confirm the current paper format on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website rather than relying on a guess.

What if all my errors are careless mistakes?

Then the next topic to revise is a habit, not a chapter: checking units, copying signs, reading the target. Put a repeated carelessness pattern at the top of the list.

How often should I redo the ranking?

After every full past paper or school test. Topics move up and down as you repair them, so a list from two months ago misleads.

If your ranking keeps pointing at topics you cannot repair alone, one-to-one Mathematics lessons let a teacher start from the exact step you lose and rebuild from there.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
