The passage
Every morning at five, Pak Rahim opens the fish stall his father started. Business has slowed since the new supermarket opened at the end of the road, but Pak Rahim does not complain. “They sell fish in plastic trays,” he says. “I sell fish that was in the sea yesterday.”
His daughter, Aina, thinks he should sell online. She has already made a page for the stall. However, he has not looked at it. This worries her, because she believes the stall may not survive another year.
Questions
Question 1. At what time does Pak Rahim open the stall?
Answer
Keyword “opens”, answer type a time. The first sentence says five in the morning. This tests locating evidence.
Question 2. Is “Business has slowed since the new supermarket opened” a fact or an opinion? Give a reason.
Answer
It is a fact, because sales before and after the opening can be checked. There is no judgement word in it. This tests the fact and opinion test.
Question 3. What does “They” refer to in “They sell fish in plastic trays”?
Answer
Candidates: the supermarket, business, Pak Rahim. Pak Rahim sells fresh fish, so the people selling fish in plastic trays must be the supermarket.
Question 4. What does “This” refer to in “This worries her”?
Answer
“This” points to the idea in the previous sentence: that he has not looked at the page she made. It is an idea, not one noun. The belief about the stall comes after “because”, so it is the reason for worry, not the thing referred to.
Question 5. What is Pak Rahim’s attitude towards the supermarket? Choose a word and give two details.
Answer
Calm and confident in his own product. Detail 1: he “does not complain”. Detail 2: he contrasts his fish with theirs in a matter-of-fact way. “Angry” is not supported, because nothing in his words shows anger.
Question 6. Why does Aina want her father to sell online? Answer with an inference and its evidence.
Answer
She probably wants to bring in more customers. Evidence: business has slowed, and she believes the stall may not survive another year. The passage does not say this directly, so it is an inference.
If you got these wrong
Wrong on question 1: revisit locating supporting evidence efficiently. Questions 2 and 6: distinguishing fact, opinion and inference.
Questions 3 and 4: tracking references across paragraphs. Question 5: understanding writer attitude without over-interpreting.
