Evidence-led Chinese reading practice

Evidence-led Chinese reading: practice set

You have met the four habits and now want to test them on fresh passages.

These seven questions train the four habits from evidence-led Chinese reading. The passages are original, and answers are in Chinese with English explanation. Try each one on paper before you open the answer.

For timed rounds, set up a session with the timed original practice session builder.

Questions

Question 1. “市政厅把公园的开放时间延长了一个小时。居民陈太太说,这是最贴心的决定。” Which sentence is a fact, and whose attitude does the other show?

Answer

The first sentence is a fact: the opening time was extended by one hour. The second sentence reports 陈太太’s attitude, shown by “最贴心”. The attitude belongs to 陈太太, not to the writer, because “说” marks her as the speaker.

Question 2. “雨点像一群调皮的孩子,在铁皮屋顶上蹦蹦跳跳。” Explain the phrase “像一群调皮的孩子”.

Answer

The device is a simile, marked by “像”. The raindrops are compared to naughty children jumping, which shows the rain is loud, lively and fast on the zinc roof.

A model answer: “这句用比喻,写雨点打在铁皮屋顶上声音热闹、跳动活泼。” Stay with what the comparison shows, and do not add that the rain is cheerful news unless the passage says so.

Question 3.

“志豪说自己最讨厌迟到。可是这个月,他已经三次在第一节课铃响后才冲进课室,书包拉链都没拉上。” Inference: 志豪的行为和他说的话不一致。 Which sentence is the evidence?

Answer

The second sentence is the evidence: “三次在第一节课铃响后才冲进课室”. It shows repeated lateness, which contradicts his claim. The first sentence only gives what he says, so it shares the topic but does not show the behaviour.

A model answer: “从‘三次在铃响后才冲进课室’可以看出,他的行为和‘最讨厌迟到’不一致。”

Question 4. 甲:“课外活动应该减少,学生需要更多时间温习。” 乙:“课外活动不应减少,学生能在其中学会合作。” State each position and reason, then one difference.

Answer

甲 wants fewer activities because students need more revision time. 乙 wants them kept because students learn cooperation. The difference is what each values: 甲 focuses on study time, 乙 on learning teamwork.

A model answer: “甲主张减少,理由是要多花时间温习;乙主张不减少,理由是能学会合作。”

Do not say 甲 thinks activities are useless, because the text only says more revision time is needed.

Question 5. “新来的邮差每天骑着旧脚踏车,把信一封封送到门前。值得称赞的是,他从不收任何小费。” What attitude does the writer show, and what fact supports it?

Answer

The writer shows praise, marked by “值得称赞的是”. The fact being praised is that the postman never accepts tips. The earlier sentence about the old bicycle is also a fact, but it is not what the praise is about.

A model answer: “作者称赞邮差,因为他从不收小费。”

Question 6.

“妈妈把饭菜热了三次,才听到大门的锁响。她没有责骂,只是轻声问:‘饿了吧?’” Inference: 妈妈关心孩子。 Give two pieces of evidence.

Answer

First, “把饭菜热了三次”: she kept the food ready while waiting. Second, “轻声问‘饿了吧?’”: her first concern is whether the child has eaten.

A model answer: “从‘把饭菜热了三次’和‘轻声问饿了吧’可以看出,妈妈一直等候,也先关心孩子有没有吃饭。” The word “责骂” is only mentioned to say she did not scold, so it should not be used as evidence for anger.

Question 7. A student answers Question 6 with “妈妈很生气,因为孩子太晚回家。” Identify the problem and rewrite the answer.

Answer

The passage never states that the mother is angry, and it says “她没有责骂”, which points the other way. The student added an unsupported interpretation. A corrected answer: “妈妈关心孩子,因为她把饭菜热了三次,回家后只是轻声问孩子饿不饿。”

Common questions

How should I use this practice set?

Cover the answers, write your response in Chinese on paper, then open the answer. Compare the clue words you used with the model, not only the final phrase. Note each miss and sort it by habit.

Are the questions in the same style as the SPM paper?

They are original practice passages written to train the same skills. They are not questions taken from any real paper. Check the current paper format on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website.

How long should each answer take?

Give yourself about two minutes for a one-sentence answer and about four for a two-step answer, then adjust as you improve. Timing matters less than checking the evidence before you write.

What if my answer differs from the model but seems reasonable?

Test it: can you point to words in the passage that support it? If yes, it may be acceptable. If it depends on something you imagined, it does not meet the evidence rule.

When you finish and some answers still look equally right to you, a teacher in one-to-one Chinese lessons can mark the reasoning with you and show which wording the passage supports.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
