Modern-text comprehension

You read Chinese passages easily but your written answers lose marks for missing proof.

Modern-text comprehension is the skill of reading a Chinese passage and answering questions so that every answer is tied to the text. This cluster breaks that skill into four parts.

It belongs to the SPM Bahasa Cina guide. The child pages below teach each part, and the glossary explains the question words.

What does the cluster cover?

A set of original questions is in the practice page, and harder passages are in evidence-led Chinese reading.

How do the skills connect?

Read this original passage: 阿明把伞让给了同学,自己淋着雨走回家。第二天,他发烧了,却仍旧准时到了学校。

Four questions use four skills.

  1. Main idea: 阿明乐于帮助同学,并且很守时。
  2. Inference: 他很有责任心。Proof: 发烧了,却仍旧准时到了学校.
  3. Word in context: 仍旧 means still, as he kept going despite being ill.
  4. Concise answer: 他为什么发烧? 因为他把伞让给同学,自己淋雨回家。

The answers get shorter and more exact as the skill improves. The same passage supports all four.

Who should start where?

If your answers Start with
Miss the overall point Main idea and paragraph roles
Are opinions without proof Supporting an inference
Misread a word because of its surface meaning Word or phrase in context
Copy whole sentences Concise questions

For a guide to the evidence habit written around the student’s situation, see avoiding unsupported interpretation in Chinese comprehension. Use the mistake log and paper-error review to find which error type repeats.

Common questions

Where should I start with Chinese reading comprehension?

Start with the skill your marked papers show you lose marks on most. If answers are vague, begin with supporting an inference. If answers are long and copied, begin with concise answers.

Why do I understand the passage but still lose marks?

Understanding and answering are separate skills. The answer must match what the question asks, be supported by the text, and be written clearly. Practise each part.

How often should I practise comprehension?

Short, regular practice works better than one long session. One passage with careful review of each answer is more useful than several passages read quickly.

Is the format of comprehension questions fixed?

Formats change over time. Check the current format on the Lembaga Peperiksaan site at lp.moe.gov.my and ask your school for recent papers.

If your reading answers feel right but keep losing marks, a one-to-one Chinese teacher can mark your written answers in Chinese and show where the evidence is missing.
