Confused characters look or sound alike but carry different meanings. The fix is to decide by meaning, not by feel.
This lesson is part of language accuracy and expression in SPM Bahasa Cina.
How do you choose between look-alike characters?
Ask what the word means in the sentence, then pick the character whose meaning matches. A shape cue can help as a backup.
| Pair or group | Meaning test | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 辨 / 辩 / 辫 | 辨 is to tell apart, 辩 is to argue, 辫 is a braid | 辨别真假, 辩论比赛, 梳辫子 |
| 未 / 末 | 未 means not yet, 末 means the end | 未来, 周末 |
A memory cue for 己 and 已: 己 is open at the top, while 已 is half closed.
Worked example: find the errors
Read this original sentence.
Check each suspect by meaning.
The word means oneself, so the character is 己. Correct: 自己.
The action is telling apart, not arguing. Correct: 辨别.
It means already, so 已 is correct here.
Notice that the third suspect was not an error. Checking by meaning also stops you over-correcting.
The mistake that keeps happening
The common slip is to write the character that feels familiar after a word you know well. Students often write 辩别 because 辩论 is a common word.
The correct habit is to ask, “Am I arguing or telling apart?” before you write. The pause takes a second and removes the guess.
How to build your own list
- Collect every wrong character from your marked work.
- Write the correct character, a meaning cue and a short sentence.
- Test yourself the next day with the sentences covered.
- Keep a character on the list until you write it right three times in a row.
The mistake log and paper-error review gives a layout for this.
Check yourself
Choose the correct character in each sentence.
Answer
辩论 means debate, so 辩论赛 is correct.
已经 means already. 以 is used in words like 可以.
周末 means the weekend. 未 means not yet and does not fit.
What to study next
Continue with improving sentence clarity and cohesion, then test the whole cluster with the practice set.
