To show a characteristic, name the trait, describe the action from the case, and state the effect. The action is the proof, and the effect is the reason it matters.
This lesson is part of entrepreneurship and business preparation. It follows identifying resources needed to start a fictional business.
How do I link a trait to an action?
Write one sentence with three parts: the trait, the action and the effect.
- Trait: name it, for example initiative.
- Action: quote or describe what the owner did.
- Effect: say what changed because of it.
A sentence with only the first part is a label, not an answer.
Worked example: Nurul’s first Saturday
Nurul sells potted herbs. On her first Saturday she sells 6 pots from a stall with 30. She asks three buyers why they did not buy, and they say the pots are too big for a flat.
Trait 1: willingness to learn from feedback. Nurul asked buyers directly why they did not buy. As a result, she learned that pot size was the problem.
Trait 2: flexibility. She switched to smaller pots the following week. Sales rose to 14 of 20 pots, because the smaller pots suited flat owners.
Trait 3: measured risk-taking. She bought only 20 seedlings for the second week, not 30. This limited her loss if the new pots also failed to sell.
Each trait is proved by a different action. No trait is stated without an action, and none lacks an effect.
The mistake that costs marks
The common slip is to list traits with no evidence: “Nurul is creative, hardworking and brave.”
| Step | Wrong | Right |
|---|---|---|
| Trait | creative | flexibility |
| Action | none | switched to smaller pots in week two |
| Effect | none | sales rose from 6 to 14 pots |
| Marker’s view | a label | a supported point |
One sentence with all three parts is worth more than three bare traits.

Amir runs a car-wash stall. One wet week he gets no customers, so he offers a home-visit wash and puts up a note in his housing area. By the next week he has 5 bookings. Write one trait, action and effect sentence.
Answer
Trait: initiative. Action: when no customers came in the wet week, Amir offered a home-visit wash and put up a note in his housing area. Effect: he received 5 bookings the next week, so he earned income in a period when the stall had none.
An equally good answer could use flexibility, since he changed how the service was delivered.
