Writing your own business plan

You have a model plan open beside yours, and your sentences keep drifting towards its wording.

Use a model plan to learn the order of sections. Write the content of every section yourself, from your own products, customers, prices and numbers.

This lesson belongs to the business plans section of SPM Business. It works with recording revisions and sources, which shows how to keep evidence of your own work.

What may I borrow, and what must be mine?

Separate structure from content.

May borrow Must be your own
The order of sections Product, name and description
The idea of a cost table Every price and quantity
Headings such as objective and risk Wording of each sentence
A way to check figures agree Facts about your customers and place

Follow your school’s own rules for assessed work. If the rules are unclear, ask your teacher.

Worked example: a mission sentence

A model plan contains this sentence: “Our mission is to provide high-quality products at affordable prices to satisfy our customers.” It could describe a bakery, a tuition agency or a phone shop.

Here is an original version for the fictional kuih stall: “Aiman’s Kuih sells boxes of ten kuih lapis at RM8, baked the evening before, to classmates who miss breakfast before the first lesson.”

The second sentence names the product, the box size, the price, the baking time and the customer. A reader can check each one. The first sentence has nothing to check.

A simple test for any section

Take a sentence and swap the business name for another one. If the sentence still works, it is generic.

  1. Add a product or service detail.
  2. Add a number you measured or checked.
  3. Add a place, a time or a named group of customers.
  4. Re-read it and swap the name again.

When the sentence no longer fits another business, it is yours.

The mistake that costs marks

The common slip is to change a few words of a model sentence and call it original. The structure and the ideas are still the model’s.

Step Wrong Right
Start copy the model’s mission, change two words write from your own stall’s facts
Result “provide quality products at fair prices” “boxes of ten kuih lapis at RM8, baked the evening before”
Swap test fits any business fits only this stall
Evidence none price check and baking record in the log

Changing words does not change whose ideas they are.

Check yourself

Rewrite this sentence for a fictional stall that sells fried bananas outside a school: “We aim to deliver excellent service and meet customer needs.”

Answer

One original version: “Kedai Pisang Goreng Hana sells ten pieces of fried banana for RM4, cooked fresh at 3 p.m., to students waiting for the school bus.”

It names the product, the quantity, the price, the time and the customer. Other versions are possible. The test is that the sentence no longer fits a different business.

What to study next

Read linking a business objective to a measurable original activity to make the objective section specific. Then try the integrated practice set.

The business case answer planner helps you organise your own facts before you write. For a teacher to read your plan with you, see online one-to-one Business tuition.

Common questions

Can I use a model plan at all?

Follow your school's and teacher's rules for assessed work. In general, a model is useful for seeing the order of sections. The content, such as products, prices, customers and numbers, should come from your own business.

What is the difference between inspiration and copying?

Learning that a plan has an objective, a market and a cost section is inspiration. Reusing another plan's sentences, figures or examples is copying, even if you change a few words.

How do I make a section specific?

Add facts a reader could check: a product name, a price, a quantity, a place, a date. If the sentence would still be true for a different business, add more of these.

What should I do if I am unsure about a rule?

Ask your teacher before you submit. Rules differ between schools and assessments, and a short question early is better than a problem later.

If your plan reads like every other plan, one-to-one Business lessons let a teacher push each section towards facts only your business has.
