Syntax practice

Syntax practice with explained answers

You have read the syntax lessons and want to test them on sentences you have not seen.

Eight items on the four skills of the syntax section. Write your answer first, then open the block.

Items 1 to 2: sentence patterns

1. Name the pattern of “Kakak saya seorang jururawat.”

Answer

FN + FN. The subjek is “kakak saya” and the predikat “seorang jururawat” is a noun phrase.

2. Name the pattern of “Cuaca di pantai itu sangat panas.”

Answer

FN + FA. The subjek is “cuaca di pantai itu” and the predikat “sangat panas” is an adjective phrase. The phrase “di pantai” is part of the subjek here, so do not read it as the predikat.

Items 3 to 4: active and passive

3. Convert to pasif: “Murid membersihkan makmal itu.”

Answer

“Makmal itu dibersihkan oleh murid.” The object moves to the front, membersihkan becomes dibersihkan and the pelaku follows with oleh.

4. Convert to pasif: “Saya membaca surat itu.”

Answer

“Surat itu saya baca.” The pelaku is first person, so the verb takes no di- and loses its meN- prefix.

Items 5 to 6: combining

5. Combine to show a reason: “Bengkel itu ditutup. Mesin rosak.”

Answer

“Bengkel itu ditutup kerana mesin rosak.” The connector “kerana” states that the damaged machine is the reason for closing.

6. Combine to show contrast: “Farah rajin. Adiknya malas.”

Answer

“Farah rajin, manakala adiknya malas.” Another acceptable connector is “tetapi”. Both show a contrast, and “manakala” suits the comparison between two people.

Items 7 to 8: components

7. Find the objek: “Semalam, pelajar itu meminjam buku sejarah di perpustakaan.”

Answer

“buku sejarah”. It answers “apa dipinjam”. The phrases “semalam” and “di perpustakaan” are keterangan of time and place.

8. Strip to the core: “Dengan penuh semangat, para atlet melatih diri di trek itu setiap petang.”

Answer

Core: “para atlet melatih diri”. Bracketed extras: (dengan penuh semangat), (di trek itu), (setiap petang). The verb is “melatih”, and the subjek is “para atlet”.

Common questions

How should I work through this set?

Write your answer before opening the explanation. If you get an item wrong, read the answer, then make up a similar sentence and do it again to see whether the method now holds.

Are these questions from past papers?

No. All sentences were written for this site to practise the syntax skills. They do not copy or predict any examination paper.

Should I learn the answers by heart?

No. A new sentence in a test will differ, so practise the method: find the subjek, name the predikat, check the verb form, and choose the connector.

If the same item type keeps going wrong, one-to-one Bahasa Melayu lessons let a teacher go through that one type with your own sentences and explain the rule behind it.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
