Novel study methods practice

Novel study practice with explained answers

You have built notes and now want to know whether they work on a fresh story.

This set has seven original questions on novel study methods. They all use one invented story, so read it once before you begin.

The story

Mira is the treasurer of a school club. In chapter 1, she finds RM20 missing from the club box and tells the teacher at once, even though she is the last person who counted it. In chapter 2, Danial offers to help her recount the money after school. In chapter 3, the money is found in the pocket of a club jacket, and Mira apologises to the member she had suspected.

Questions

Question 1. Write a row for Mira in a character-event-evidence table for chapter 1.

Answer

Mira | Reports the missing RM20, chapter 1 | She tells the teacher at once although she was the last to count the money | Jujur. A full row has all four parts, with evidence from the event.

Question 2. Name the nilai shown by Danial in chapter 2 and give the evidence.

Answer

Bekerjasama or bertimbang rasa. He offers to recount the money after school, which shows he is willing to help without being asked.

Question 3. Write the three-link chain for Mira’s apology in chapter 3.

Answer

Event: the money is found in a jacket pocket. Action: Mira apologises to the member she had suspected. Value: berhemah tinggi or rendah hati, because she admits the mistake openly and respects the other person’s feelings.

Question 4. For the nilai jujur, score chapters 1 and 3 on fit, proof and explanation.

Answer

Score each criterion out of 2.

Chapter 1 scores 2, 2, 2, total 6, because reporting the loss although she is the last counter shows honesty clearly. Chapter 3 scores 1, 2, 2, total 5, because the apology shows admitting a mistake, which is honesty but mostly humility. Choose chapter 1.

Question 5. What is the fault in this answer: “Mira seorang yang jujur.”?

Answer

It names the nilai but has no event and no explanation. A repaired answer: “Mira jujur. Dia melaporkan kehilangan wang RM20 kepada guru dengan segera walaupun dia orang terakhir yang mengira wang itu.”

Question 6. A friend’s notes say “Mira finds the money herself on page 41”. How do you check this?

Answer

Compare it with the story. In chapter 3, the money is found in a jacket pocket and the story does not say Mira found it. Check every detail against your own copy before it goes into your notes, and use a chapter label instead of a page number.

Question 7. Give one pengajaran from the story and show the nilai that supports it.

Answer

A pengajaran: Kita hendaklah bersikap jujur dan tidak menuduh orang lain tanpa bukti. The supporting nilai is jujur, from Mira’s report in chapter 1, and berhemah tinggi, from her apology in chapter 3.

If you got these wrong

For questions 1 and 6, go back to building a character-event-evidence table and checking your novel. For questions 2, 3 and 5, use connecting an event to a stated value.

For questions 4 and 7, use comparing suitable events for a question. Schedule timed rounds with the timed original practice session builder.

Common questions

Why does the practice use an invented story?

The story is original so that you practise the method, not recall of a particular novel. After each question, repeat it on your own prescribed text using your table.

How should I write the answers?

Write full sentences in Bahasa Melayu for the nilai and the explanation, because that is how answers are written. Use the model answers to compare structure, not to copy wording.

Should I time myself?

First work untimed and aim for accuracy. After one clean round, repeat the questions you missed with a short time limit.

If you can answer here but freeze on your own prescribed novel, a one-to-one BM teacher can run the same drills on your actual text and your own table.
