A nilai needs proof. Name the value, describe the event, then explain in one sentence how the character’s action shows it.
This lesson is part of novel study methods. To tell a nilai from a tema or a pengajaran first, read separating theme, issue, value and lesson.
What is the chain from event to nilai?
Use a three-link chain. Each link is a short sentence.
- Event: what happened, in one line.
- Action: what the character chose to do within it.
- Value: the nilai that the action shows, with the reason.
The action link matters most. An event is something that happens, but a nilai belongs to a choice the character makes.
Worked example with an original mini-story
This story is original. During a school gotong-royong, Hana sees that the field is littered, and her group is already marked as finished. She stays behind to collect the rest of the rubbish alone.
Event: the class gotong-royong ends with litter left in one corner of the field.
Action: Hana stays after the others leave and collects it on her own.
Value: bertanggungjawab, because she treats the job as hers to finish, not a task to leave once the group has been marked done.
The answer reads: “Hana bertanggungjawab. Apabila gotong-royong tamat, dia masih tinggal untuk mengutip sampah yang tertinggal, walaupun kumpulannya sudah dianggap selesai. Tindakan ini menunjukkan dia menyempurnakan tugas tanpa perlu disuruh.”
The mistake that costs marks
The weak answer states the value and nothing more: “Hana seorang yang bertanggungjawab.” A marker has no proof that the student knows the text.
A second slip is to use an event that does not show the value. “Hana suka makan nasi lemak” is an event, yet it shows no nilai, so it cannot be used.
| Weak answer | Stronger answer |
|---|---|
| Hana bertanggungjawab. | Hana bertanggungjawab kerana dia tinggal mengutip sampah selepas gotong-royong tamat. |
| Dia baik. | Dia menunjukkan kerjasama kerana dia membantu rakan kumpulan membawa guni sampah. |
Check yourself
In the same story, Hana’s friend Irfan carries the full sacks to the bin after seeing she is tired. Name one nilai and write the three-link chain.
Answer
A suitable nilai is bertimbang rasa.
Event: the full sacks must be carried to the bin after the gotong-royong. Action: Irfan sees that Hana is tired and carries the sacks himself. Value: bertimbang rasa, because he notices another person’s tiredness and acts without being asked.
Kerjasama is also acceptable if the explanation points to them finishing the task together.
What to study next
When a question gives you a choice of events, you need to pick the best one. That skill is in comparing suitable events for a question. Practise writing chains on the claim, evidence and explanation revision desk.
