A factual or explanatory task asks you to tell the reader how something works or why it happens. Every paragraph needs three parts: the point (isi), the explanation (huraian) and an example (contoh).
This lesson sits in essay forms and register. If you still mix up formal and informal Malay, read choosing formal or informal register first.
How is a factual task different from other forms?
A factual task uses information to explain. It does not tell a story and it does not argue for one side.
Three quick checks help you decide:
- The task verb is terangkan, huraikan or jelaskan, not bincangkan.
- The question asks about a process, a cause, a benefit or a procedure.
- No side is given that you must defend.
If two of these are true, plan an explanatory essay and keep the tone neutral.
Worked example: turning a list into an explanation
Take this original task: Huraikan langkah yang dilakukan oleh sekolah untuk mengurangkan sisa makanan di kantin.
A first draft lists facts:
Sekolah menyediakan tong sisa makanan. Murid diminta mengambil makanan secukupnya. Kantin menjual bahagian yang lebih kecil.
Each sentence is true, but nothing is explained. Rebuild it as point, explanation, example.
| Part | Sentence |
|---|---|
| Isi | Sekolah menggalakkan murid mengambil makanan secukupnya. |
| Huraian | Apabila murid mengambil hanya apa yang mampu dihabiskan, lebih sedikit makanan dibuang selepas waktu rehat. |
| Contoh | Sebagai contoh, pihak kantin menyediakan bahagian kecil dan besar supaya murid boleh memilih mengikut keperluan. |
The rebuilt paragraph now answers the task. It names a step, explains how the step reduces waste and gives a concrete case.
The mistake that keeps marks low
The common slip is to stack isi without huraian. The paragraph has four correct sentences, but the reader still asks, “So how does that help?”
The fix is to add the word “because” mentally after every isi. If you cannot finish the sentence, the paragraph has no explanation yet. Write the explanation using kerana, supaya or dengan itu, which push you to state the link.
Keeping the register right
Factual writing uses formal Bahasa Melayu throughout, with full sentences and standard vocabulary. Avoid spoken forms such as nak, dah and tak, and avoid second-person address unless the task asks for a speech or letter.
Plan before you write. Use the BM essay plan builder to put one isi, one huraian and one contoh in a row for each paragraph, and check the rows before drafting.
Check yourself
Turn this list into one explained paragraph for the task Terangkan kepentingan membaca buku di perpustakaan sekolah:
Perpustakaan ada banyak buku. Murid boleh meminjam buku. Suasana perpustakaan senyap.
Answer
A possible paragraph:
Perpustakaan sekolah membolehkan murid meminjam pelbagai bahan bacaan secara percuma. Apabila murid boleh membawa pulang buku, mereka dapat membaca dengan lebih kerap tanpa perlu membeli sendiri. Sebagai contoh, seorang murid yang meminjam dua buku sains setiap bulan dapat mengukuhkan kefahaman tentang topik yang sedang dipelajari.
Check: there is one isi, one huraian joined by “apabila” and one contoh. The quiet setting can become a second paragraph with its own explanation.
What to study next
Continue with developing a narrative with a clear sequence to compare the two forms, then try the practice set for this cluster.
