Arabic verbs and sentences: practice with answers

You have read the lessons, so now see whether the rules hold on new sentences.

These eight original questions move from reading a verb to repairing a sentence. Work on paper, then open each answer.

This set belongs to the SPM Arabic subject guide. Check the answers only after you have written your own.

Questions

1. State the person and time of كَتَبْتُ. Translate it.

Answer

The ending ـتُ marks “I” and past. “I wrote.”

2. State the person and time of تَلْعَبُ سلمى في الحديقةِ. Translate the sentence.

Answer

The prefix ت with the named subject سلمى gives “she” and present. “Salma plays in the garden.”

3. Choose the correct verb: (ذَهَبَ / ذَهَبَتْ) الطالبةُ إلى المدرسةِ.

Answer

ذَهَبَتْ. The doer الطالبةُ is feminine, so the verb takes تْ.

4. Arrange into a verbal sentence: الرسالةَ / كَتَبَ / الولدُ.

Answer

كَتَبَ الولدُ الرسالةَ. “The boy wrote the letter.” Verb first, doer second, object last.

5. The sentence غدًا نَذْهَبُ إلى السوقِ uses which time and person? Is the time word consistent?

Answer

“We” and present. غدًا means “tomorrow”, so a present verb fits. “Tomorrow we go to the market.”

6. Correct the error: ذَهَبُوا الطلابُ إلى المدرسةِ.

Answer

ذَهَبَ الطلابُ إلى المدرسةِ. A verb before its doer stays singular. The alternative is الطلابُ ذَهَبُوا إلى المدرسةِ.

7. Correct the error: هذه معلّمةٌ كريمٌ.

Answer

هذه معلّمةٌ كريمةٌ. The noun is feminine, so the adjective needs the ة. “This is a kind teacher.”

8. Read and explain: أمسِ قَرَأْنا القصةَ، والآنَ نَكْتُبُ عنها. What are the two verbs, and what is the change in time?

Answer

قَرَأْنا is “we” past, confirmed by أمسِ. نَكْتُبُ is “we” present, confirmed by الآنَ. “Yesterday we read the story, and now we write about it.”

Common questions

Are these past SPM questions?

No. All eight questions and every sentence are original, written for this page. They follow the skills taught in the lessons, so use your school papers for the real exam format.

How should I attempt the set?

Cover the answer, write your response on paper, then open the answer. Mark the clue that decided it. If you missed the clue, return to the lesson listed at the end.

What if I score low?

A low score points to the clue you are skipping, not to a lack of ability. Note the question numbers, revisit the matching lesson and try the set again after a day.

When you miss a question here, a teacher in one-to-one Arabic lessons can ask you to explain your reasoning aloud and spot which clue you skipped.
