Repeating the same error does not mean you are careless or lazy. It means correcting a wrong answer is not the same as changing the habit that produced it.
This page gives you a way to sort mistakes by type so each one gets the right fix. It sits in the students section and works together with the mistake log and paper-error review tool.
Why does copying the correct answer not work?
When you read a model answer, everything looks obvious. That feeling of “I knew that” is not learning, because you have not produced the answer yourself.
The test is simple: can you solve a similar question on a blank page three days later? If not, the mistake is still there.
The four types of mistake
Sort each lost mark into one type.
- Knowledge: you did not know the fact, formula or term.
- Method: you knew the ideas but chose or ordered the steps wrongly.
- Reading: you misread the question, such as missing “in kN” or “explain”.
- Slip: you knew it and made an arithmetic or copying error.
Each type has a different cure. Knowledge needs recall practice, method needs worked examples, reading needs a marking routine, and slips need a check.
Worked example with an invented student
Farid (an invented student) loses a mark on a Physics question: a car of mass 1 200 kg accelerates at 2.5 m/s². Find the force in kN.
He writes F = 1 200 × 2.5 = 3 000 and stops. The question wanted 3 kN. His log reads:
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Mistake type | Reading (unit asked: kN) |
| What I did | Left the answer in N |
| Fix | Circle the unit in the question before solving |
| Retest | Similar question in three days |
Three days later he meets a question about 800 kg and 1.5 m/s² for the force in kN. He circles “kN”, writes F = 800 × 1.5 = 1 200 N, and converts to 1.2 kN. The fix worked because it changed the routine, not just the answer.
What to do after every practice paper
- Mark with a different coloured pen so you can see the lost marks.
- Write the type next to each one.
- Pick the most common type and write one rule for it.
- Add one retest question to your calendar three days later.
For a single question, how to review a question you got wrong shows the steps in detail.
Self-check
Look at your last paper and find a mistake that also appeared in an earlier paper. Which of the four types is it?
Answer
If you cannot tell, write what you were thinking at that line, because the thought reveals the type. “I forgot the formula” is knowledge, “I was not sure which step came next” is method, “I did not see the word” is reading, and “I knew it but wrote 12 instead of 21” is a slip.
When paid one-to-one tuition may be worth considering
Self-review works when you can name the type yourself. If every error feels like “I just did not know it”, or you correct papers carefully and still lose the same marks, a teacher watching your working can see what is going wrong.
Bring your corrected papers to the one-hour trial class (from RM50). The teacher can start from your own mistakes instead of a fixed lesson plan.
