Our online one-to-one SPM Tarian tuition gives each student an experienced teacher assigned to them, with lessons on written reflection, terminology and planning. Movement itself is not coached over video and stays supervised at school. The first class is a one-hour trial from RM50, and more than 9,000 students have been helped through our service.
Who Tarian tuition helps most
Dance students know what happened in the room. Writing it down is where they need help.
- Reflections that say “it was good”. The student felt the rehearsal went well but names nothing specific.
- Terms used loosely. Words for timing, space and expression are mixed up or left out.
- Notes with no next step. A problem is written down and then dropped, so nothing changes.
A one-to-one teacher can turn a short note into a full reflection by asking what happened, why, and what to try next. The lesson on reflecting on timing and expression in a supervised rehearsal record works on this.
What a lesson looks like: from a rehearsal log to a reflection
Here is an illustrative example. The log entry is invented and records a supervised rehearsal at school.
Log (invented): “Rehearsal 3. Group entered at bar 9. I was late by about one count. Teacher reminded us to count in. Next time I counted ‘and’ before the entry and was on time.”
The teacher helps the student turn this into four parts.
- Observation: I entered one count late at bar 9.
- Cause: I was watching the group instead of counting, so I missed the cue.
- Change: in the next run I counted the lead-in silently before the entry.
- Result and next check: I entered on time, so I will test whether this holds when the music is faster.
Put together, the reflection is specific and shows growth: the student can name the error, the reason, the adjustment and what will be tested next. That is very different from “my timing improved”.
The student then practises the same four parts on other rehearsal notes, including one about expression, such as facial focus during a slow section.
What one-to-one lessons can and cannot do
Lessons can build reflective writing, terminology and answer structure, working from notes the student has made.
Movement practice, technique correction and any assessed performance stay at school under supervision. Remote movement coaching is unsafe, because the teacher cannot see the space or the body clearly, so lessons do not include it.
How starting works
In your WhatsApp message, give your form and the piece you are rehearsing. We arrange a one-hour trial class (from RM50) with an experienced teacher, and the fee is agreed before it starts. The fee and schedule are agreed with the teacher afterwards, so lessons can work around rehearsal dates.
