Our online one-to-one SPM Reka Bentuk Kraf tuition gives each student an experienced teacher assigned to them, with lessons on explaining an original craft concept and its design choices. The first class is a one-hour trial from RM50, and more than 9,000 students have been helped through our service.
Who Reka Bentuk Kraf tuition helps most
Craft students tend to be more confident with their hands than with their words.
- Materials chosen by habit. The student picks what is familiar and cannot say why it suits the object.
- Form disconnected from use. The shape is decorative, but the write-up does not link it to how the object will be used.
- Concepts described, not justified. The idea is stated in one line, with no reasons behind it.
A one-to-one teacher asks “why this material, for this job?” until the answer is specific. The lesson on explaining material and form choices for an original craft concept practises exactly that.
What a lesson looks like: material and form for a purpose
Here is a worked example. The concept is invented.
Concept (invented): a woven holder for pens on a student desk, made from mengkuang strips.
The teacher builds a small table with the student: requirement, choice, reason.
| Requirement | Choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Stand upright when filled | Cylindrical form, wider base | A wide base lowers the centre of weight, so it resists tipping |
| Light enough to move | Mengkuang strips | Natural leaf strips are light and flexible to weave |
| Edge that does not fray or cut | Folded and bound rim | Strips are turned inward and tied so the edge is firm |
The explanation the student writes reads: the holder is cylindrical with a wider base so it stands firmly, and mengkuang is chosen because it is light and can be woven into a tight wall. The rim is reinforced because unbound strip ends would loosen with use.
The student also notes one weakness honestly: natural fibre may mark if it gets wet, so the holder is for dry desk use. Stating a limit shows design judgement, and the student practises this on new concepts.
What one-to-one lessons can and cannot do
Lessons can build concept development, reasoning about materials and explanation writing, with feedback on sketches and wording.
Cutting, weaving, joining, finishing and any assessed making remain at school with supervision, and a teacher cannot make or repair the student’s piece. Lessons stay with the thinking that shapes the work.
How starting works
In your WhatsApp message, give your form and the craft concept you are developing. We arrange a one-hour trial class (from RM50) with an experienced teacher, and the fee is agreed before it starts.
