Two-by-two matrix operations tutor

You can follow the matrix rules in class but lose marks on a sign or an order.

This tool works through 2×2 matrix operations one line at a time, so you can see why an answer comes out the way it does. It helps students who get the method right in class but slip on a sign, a row or a column when working alone.

Everything you enter stays on this device.

How do I use it?

  1. Type the four entries of Matrix A and Matrix B. Row 1 is a and b, row 2 is c and d.
  2. Choose an operation: add, subtract, multiply in either order, a determinant or an inverse.
  3. Press “Show working” and read the result and the steps beneath it.
  4. Change one entry and run it again to see how the answer moves.

How does it work?

Everything is calculated in exact fractions, so no rounding hides a mistake. The rules are the ones in your textbook.

  • Addition and subtraction work entry by entry, so both matrices must have the same order. Here both are 2×2.
  • Multiplication takes row 1 of the first matrix with column 1 of the second, and so on. Each entry is a sum of two products.
  • The determinant of [a b; c d] is ad − bc.
  • The inverse is 1/(ad − bc) × [d −b; −c a]. The tool then multiplies the original by the inverse to show the identity matrix.

If the determinant is 0, the tool stops and explains that the inverse is undefined. It never gives a made-up answer.

A short worked example

Take A = [2 1; 5 3] and choose “Inverse of A”.

The determinant is 2 × 3 − 1 × 5 = 1. Swapping a and d and changing the signs of b and c gives [3 −1; −5 2]. Dividing by 1 leaves it unchanged, so the inverse is [3 −1; −5 2].

The check line multiplies A by this inverse and shows [1 0; 0 1]. That tells you the answer is right before you copy it into your working.

What are its limits?

The tool handles 2×2 matrices only. It shows the method, not the layout your school expects. It cannot tell you which operation a word problem needs. It also does not solve simultaneous equations for you, although the inverse it finds is the one you use in that method.

Where does it connect to the lessons?

Use it after reading matrix order and entries, then practise with adding and multiplying matrices. When the inverse feels shaky, see finding the inverse of a 2×2 matrix, and then solving simultaneous equations with matrices.

Common questions

Why does the tool say my matrix has no inverse?

The inverse needs division by the determinant ad − bc. When the determinant is 0, that division is undefined, so the matrix is called singular and has no inverse. The tool shows the determinant working so you can see where the 0 comes from.

Is AB always equal to BA?

No. Matrix multiplication depends on order, and for most pairs of matrices AB and BA give different answers. The tool shows both products whenever you multiply, so you can compare them.

Can I use fractions and decimals?

Yes. Type entries such as 3/4, -2/5 or 0.5. The tool works in exact fractions, so an inverse is shown as a fraction and not as a rounded decimal.

Does the tool replace my working in the exam?

No. It is for checking and learning. In the exam you still write your own method, so use the steps here as a model for how to set out the working.

If the steps show that signs or multiplication order keep going wrong, a teacher in a one-to-one lesson can rebuild the method from the row-by-column idea and practise it with you.
