This tool takes a small fictional ledger and lets you add one mistake at a time, then shows whether the trial balance catches it. A second mode applies year-end adjustments and traces them through the income statement and the statement of financial position.
Trial balance and adjustment explorer
Your trial balance agrees but the answer is still marked wrong.
Everything you enter stays on this device.
It helps students who can prepare a trial balance but are unsure what “it agrees” proves.
How do I use it?
- Choose what to explore: errors or adjustments.
- For errors, pick one error type and an amount between RM1 and RM2 000.
- For adjustments, enter the accrued wages, prepaid rent, depreciation rate and closing inventory, and tick which adjustments to apply.
- Press “Show result” and read the trial balance, the difference and the correcting entry, or the before and after statements.
How does it work?
The ledger has eight debit accounts and three credit accounts, and both sides total RM55 000 before any mistake. Each error changes only the accounts it would really change, then the tool adds all debits and all credits again.
If the two totals differ, the tool reports the difference and which side is larger. If they are equal, it says that the trial balance cannot reveal the error. The correcting entry is given as a journal line, using a suspense account where a difference had to be parked.
For adjustments, the tool recalculates cost of sales, expenses and net profit, then builds total assets and total equity and liabilities. Both totals must match, which confirms the accounting equation still holds.
A short worked example
Choose “One-sided entry” with RM500. A cash sale was credited to Sales but the debit to Bank was never posted, so credits are RM500 larger than debits.
The trial balance shows the problem but not the cause. Now choose “Compensating errors” with RM500: Sales and Purchases are both overstated, and the totals stay equal even though two accounts are wrong.
In adjustment mode, the default figures lower net profit from RM4 900 to RM3 500. Wages rise by RM400, rent falls by RM200 and depreciation of RM1 200 is charged.
What are its limits?
The ledger is one small, fixed, fictional sole trader, and you add one error at a time. It cannot check your own figures, and it does not replace assessed work at school.
The example charges a full year of depreciation on the equipment, with no residual value, and closing inventory is the figure you enter.
Where does it connect to the lessons?
Use it alongside the trial balance practice questions and the adjustments practice questions. The lesson on correction of errors shows how to fix each error type, and the sole trader financial statements lesson shows where the adjusted figures end up.
If the same kinds of error keep appearing in your own answers, SPM Accounting tuition gives you a teacher to work through them with you. It starts with the one-hour trial class (from RM50).
Common questions
If my trial balance agrees, is my work correct?
No. Equal totals only show that total debits equal total credits. Errors of omission, commission, principle, reversal and compensating errors all leave the totals equal, and the tool shows each one against the same ledger.
Why is the difference divisible by 9 for a transposition?
Swapping two adjacent digits changes a number by a multiple of 9. For example 2 400 written as 2 040 is 360 less, and 360 divided by 9 is 40. A difference divisible by 9 is a hint to look for swapped digits.
Why do accrued wages lower profit but prepaid rent does not?
An accrual adds an expense that belongs to the year but is not yet paid, so profit falls. A prepayment removes the part of a payment that belongs to next year from this year's expense, so profit rises.
Can I use this to check my school assignment?
The ledger is fictional and fixed, so it cannot check your own figures. It is for understanding how errors and adjustments behave. Your assessed work should be prepared and checked by you, at school.
A teacher working one-to-one can look at which kind of error or adjustment keeps costing you marks, then rebuild that step with fresh examples until you can explain it yourself.
