Backing a Semai reading answer with evidence

You can follow the Semai passage, but your answers do not show where you found the point.

A reading answer is stronger when it shows where the answer comes from. The routine here is point, proof and explain, and it works for passages in any language, including Semai.

It is part of the SPM subjects and learning resources collection. After your answer is drafted, use revising an original short response using a checklist.

How does point, proof, explain work?

State your point in one sentence. Give the proof, which is the few words in the passage that support it. Then explain in a sentence how the proof leads to your point.

Always write the parts in this order. The order keeps you from forgetting the explanation, which is the part that earns the most.

Worked example: an original passage

The passage is an original paraphrase, given in English so the method is visible. On your paper, the passage and the evidence would be in Semai.

Passage (paraphrase). “Along the river, the children collected the fallen fruit and shared it equally, even though the youngest could only carry two. When the basket was full, the eldest lifted it so the smaller ones could walk ahead.”

Question. What does the passage show about how the children treat each other?

Point. They look after one another.

Proof. The words “shared it equally” and “lifted it so the smaller ones could walk ahead”.

Explanation. Sharing equally shows fairness, and the eldest carrying the basket shows the stronger child helps the weaker ones.

The mistake: copying the line

The common slip is to copy the whole second sentence as proof. The marker then has to guess which part you meant.

Step Weak Stronger
Point (missing) They look after one another
Proof The whole sentence copied “lifted it so the smaller ones could walk ahead”
Explanation (missing) The eldest helps the smaller children, which shows care

The stronger version is shorter. It proves the point with the exact phrase and adds one sentence of explanation.

Finding the proof quickly

  1. Read the question and underline its key word, such as “treat”, “feel” or “why”.
  2. Find the sentence in the passage that answers it.
  3. Cut the sentence down to the shortest phrase that still proves the point.

If two phrases both work, choose the one that contains an action or a detail, not a general word.

What can be taught online, and what stays at school?

Reading skills, language explanation and writing practice can be covered in one-to-one online lessons. The assessment itself, its format and any requirements for the subject are set by the school and the examination authority, so confirm current details with your teacher and the Lembaga Peperiksaan website.

Passage (original paraphrase). “Before dawn, Along woke the whole house so they could carry the harvest to the market early. He counted the baskets twice and tied each one.”

Question. What does the passage show about Along? Write a point, proof and explanation.

Answer

Point: Along is careful and hardworking.

Proof: “counted the baskets twice and tied each one”.

Explanation: Counting twice shows he wants to avoid a mistake, and tying each basket shows he prepares properly before leaving. Waking the house before dawn adds that he works early for the family.

Common questions

What is evidence in a reading answer?

Evidence is the small part of the passage that shows your answer is right. You point to it by quoting a few words, then explain how those words prove your point.

How much of the passage should I quote?

Only the words that do the proving. Quoting the full sentence hides what you understood. A short phrase, correctly chosen and explained, shows the marker you read closely.

What if I do not understand a word in the passage?

Use the words around it, such as a repeated name or an action, to work out the meaning. Flag the word to your teacher afterwards, since assessed-language vocabulary is best confirmed with a teacher.

Can this be practised alone?

Yes, using short passages and the routine here. One-to-one lessons add a teacher who can explain the language and give feedback, which is harder to get from a routine alone.

If you follow the passage but cannot show where your answer comes from, a one-to-one Semai teacher can give feedback on your own practice answers.
