A cause, development and effect answer tells the story of a movement in three linked parts: why it began, how it grew and what it led to. This structure turns a list of events into an explanation.
This is the last lesson in the nationalism cluster. It uses the channels from explaining the role of print, education and organisations.
What goes in each part?
| Part | Question it answers | What to write |
|---|---|---|
| Cause | Why did it begin? | A grievance, idea or condition |
| Development | How did it grow? | New groups, actions or demands |
| Effect | Where did it lead? | A change in rule, law or outlook |
Write one or two sentences for each part, then add a link sentence between them.
Worked example: Malay opposition to the Malayan Union
The topic is the Malay response to the Malayan Union in 1946. Here is a list-style answer first.
List version: “The Malayan Union began on 1 April 1946. UMNO was formed in May 1946. The Federation of Malaya began on 1 February 1948.”
Every fact is right 1 2, but the answer never says how one event led to the next. A marker has to guess the links.
Structured version:
Cause. Under the Malayan Union, the Malay rulers lost their power to rule, which was limited to custom and religion 3, so Malays felt their own position and their rulers’ standing were under threat.
Development. As a result, Malay leaders came together and formed UMNO under Dato’ Onn Jaafar in May 1946, and the movement united Malay opposition to the Malayan Union 2.
Effect. The Malayan Union was replaced by the Federation of Malaya on 1 February 1948 1, which showed that organised, shared action could change a British plan.
The facts are the same, but the answer now explains. The words “so”, “as a result” and “which showed” carry the reasoning.
A method for planning in two minutes
- Write three headings: Cause, Development, Effect.
- Put each fact from your notes under one heading.
- Cross out any fact that does not connect to the others.
- Write a link phrase between the parts before you start.
This plan takes two minutes. It saves you from writing a long paragraph with no direction.
The mistake that costs marks
The usual slip is to put an effect in the cause section. The replacement of the Malayan Union is an effect, so it cannot also be the reason UMNO was formed.
Check each part with a single test: does this sentence answer the part’s question? If it does not, move it.

Using the Malayan Union example, write a one-sentence link between the development and the effect.
Answer
“Because UMNO gathered Malay opposition behind one organisation, the British saw a united response and replaced the Malayan Union with the Federation of Malaya.”
The sentence shows how the development (the formation of UMNO and its resistance) produced the effect (the new federation).
What to study next
Test the structure in the nationalism practice set. The evidence-to-explanation planner helps you place each fact in a column.
If your structured answers still read as lists, see online one-to-one Sejarah tuition.
