These seven questions follow the four lessons in Malaysia in global issues. They use real examples, and each short source is adapted from published information and written in our own words.
Try each before opening the answer, and write in full sentences.
Questions
Q1. Classify and give a reason: ASEAN was founded in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Answer
Regional. Five neighbouring Southeast Asian states are involved, and their governments must cooperate 2.
Q2. Classify and give a reason: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Malaysia has joined 38 UN peacekeeping operations since 1960 1.
Answer
Global. The operations run through the United Nations, with many governments acting together and effects far from Malaysia 1.
Q3. A student classifies the Pulau Batu Puteh dispute as “legal, so global”. Correct it.
Answer
The student used the topic and the body that settled it, not the reach. The dispute was between two neighbouring states, Malaysia and Singapore, so it is regional, even though the ICJ gave its ruling on 23 May 2008 3.
Q4. Write the action, source and reason: Malaya joined the UN on 17 September 1957 (source: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page).
Answer
Action: Malaya became the 82nd UN member on 17 September 1957 4. Source: the UN reference page. Reason: joining committed the new state to take part in the world body, which shows participation at the global level.
Q5. Rewrite with a fact: “Malaysia did a wonderful job in peacekeeping.” Source: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Malaysia has joined 38 operations with nearly 40,000 personnel.” 1
Answer
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Malaysia has joined 38 UN peacekeeping operations with nearly 40,000 personnel 1, which suggests a sustained commitment.” The fact comes first, and the judgement follows from it.
Q6. Identify the missing part: “Malaysia is active at the UN and the government is doing well.”
Answer
The answer has no past point, no bridge and no source. It is news-style. Add the 1957 membership, a “still matters because” sentence and a named source.
Q7. Write a four-part answer: Malaya joined the UN on 17 September 1957; later, Malaysia served four terms on the Security Council (source: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page).
Answer
“Malaya joined the United Nations on 17 September 1957. This still matters because membership gave Malaysia a place in the body where it later served four non-permanent Security Council terms, in 1965, 1989 to 1990, 1999 to 2000 and 2015 to 2016 5. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page is the source.”
If you got these wrong
Q1 to Q3 point to classifying regional and global issues. Q4 needs explaining participation using sourced examples.
Q5 links to separating fact from evaluative language. Q6 and Q7 belong to answering a contemporary-link question.
