SPM Sejarah terms and question words

Your teacher says 'sumber primer' and 'kesan' and you are not sure what to write.

This glossary explains Sejarah terms and command words in plain English, with Bahasa Melayu equivalents. Each entry has a short example and a term it is confused with.

The terms belong to SPM Sejarah. For a bridge tool with Chinese explanations, use the terminology bridge. The command words are explained further in decoding state, explain, compare and evaluate commands.

How should you use this page?

Pick the term from your latest feedback, read the entry and use it in one sentence about a chapter you know. Then look for the term in your next practice question.

For the chapters themselves, see formation of Malaysia and foreign relations. For a teacher to explain a term on your answer, see online one-to-one Sejarah tuition.

Common questions

Why do Sejarah terms matter?

Questions and feedback use them. If you read 'huraikan' as 'state' you write one line when the question wants a developed explanation. Knowing the term tells you how much to write.

Do I write my answers in BM or English?

Follow the language of your paper and your school's instructions. The glossary gives both so that you can link an English explanation to the Malay term your textbook uses.

Is this an official glossary?

No. It is a plain-language revision aid. For the exact wording in your syllabus and papers, check your textbook and the Lembaga Peperiksaan and BPK websites.

Which terms should I learn first?

Learn the command words first, then the terms from the chapter you are studying. Add a term to your notes when it appears in a question or in a comment on your work.

If a term still feels unclear after reading here, a one-to-one Sejarah teacher can show it on your own answer and explain it in the language you find easiest.
