An organisation’s role is what it does for its members. To answer a question on roles, state the role, give one example and link it to Malaysia.
This lesson is part of foreign relations. It builds on the reasons in explaining factors influencing foreign relations.
How do you keep organisations apart?
Sort them by reach first, then by purpose.
| Reach | Example | One-line role |
|---|---|---|
| Global | United Nations | A world body for peace, cooperation and development |
| Regional | ASEAN | Cooperation among Southeast Asian states on security, economy and society |
| Group with shared history | Commonwealth | Cooperation among states with historical ties to Britain |
| Group with shared faith | Organisation of Islamic Cooperation | Cooperation among states with Muslim-majority populations |
The United Nations admitted Malaya as its 82nd member on 17 September 1957. 2 The OIC was founded in 1969, and Malaysia has been a member since that year. 3 Malaysia has been a Commonwealth member since independence in 1957. 4
The grid gives you a first sentence for any role question, because you start with the reach and then the purpose.
Worked example: stating a role with evidence
Question: “State the role of ASEAN and give one example of its work.”
Answer: “ASEAN is a regional organisation that encourages cooperation among Southeast Asian states. Malaysia was one of the five founding members when ASEAN was formed in Bangkok on 8 August 1967, and its declaration aimed to speed economic, social and cultural development and promote regional peace.” 1
The answer has three parts: the role, an example and a link to Malaysia. If the question asked for a second role, you would repeat the structure with a different purpose.
The mistake: blurring the organisations
A student who has memorised a list might write: “The United Nations and ASEAN both help Malaysia.” The sentence is true but does not show what either one does.
| Blurred | Clear |
|---|---|
| “The UN and ASEAN help Malaysia.” | “The UN gave the new country a place in a world body, and ASEAN gave it a regional forum.” |
The fix is to write the reach in the first few words, such as “a global body” or “a regional group”.
Why does Malaysia take part?
Connect each role back to a reason from the factors lesson. A global body offers recognition and a voice in world issues. A regional group offers a forum close to home on security and trade.
This connection turns a role statement into an explanation, which is what most longer questions ask for.

Complete the answer. “The Commonwealth is ___. Malaysia belonged to it because ___.”
Answer
“The Commonwealth is an association of states with historical ties to Britain that cooperate on shared interests. Malaysia has been a member since independence in 1957, because it had been under British rule and membership kept it in touch with states that shared that history.”
Use your textbook to check the exact areas listed there. The structure of role, example and link is what matters.
What to study next
Move on to comparing bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Track any role you confuse in a mistake log.
