Emergency and security responses

You remember measures of the Emergency as a list, but your answers do not link them to purposes.

Good Emergency answers explain the context, sort measures into military, administrative and social types, link each to a purpose and effect, and use sources carefully. This hub trains those four skills.

It belongs to the SPM Sejarah guide. The period that follows the war is covered in political transition after war.

What does the cluster cover?

How do the skills connect?

The first lesson gives the situation, and the second sorts measures by type. The third links each measure to a purpose and an effect.

The fourth lesson teaches you to check sources for origin and purpose, so your evidence is fair.

One example of the four skills together

Take the Briggs Plan, which General Sir Harold Briggs introduced in 1950. 1 A context sentence states the problem: the communists drew food and information from residents in rural areas.

The plan’s central administrative measure was resettlement into New Villages, and it was backed by military operations. The resettlement succeeded in cutting off the communists’ food supplies and their links for communication, information and medicine. 2

The social side, such as services in the villages, is recorded in your textbook. The plan’s purpose was to separate guerrillas from their civilian supporters, and sources can document its effects. A good answer names the type, purpose and effect of each measure, then checks who wrote the source.

Where should you start?

Begin with the context lesson if your answers jump straight to measures. Start with the third lesson if you can name the measures but not explain why they were used.

When you are ready, try the practice set and the evidence-to-explanation planner. For teacher support, see online one-to-one Sejarah tuition.

Common questions

Why do students find the Emergency hard to write about?

The topic has a long list of measures, bodies and effects, so notes turn into a list. Sorting measures by type, linking each to a stated purpose and then noting effects gives the answer a clear structure.

How should I treat sources on the Emergency?

Read each source for who wrote it, when and for what purpose, and stay with what it shows. Do not bring in modern political arguments, because the question asks for evidence from the period.

Where should I start in this cluster?

Start with the context, because each measure answers a problem. Then sort measures by type, link them to purposes and effects, and finish with careful source evaluation.

If your Emergency answers list measures without saying why each was chosen, a one-to-one Sejarah teacher can rework one of your essays with you, measure by measure.
